Autumnal Thoughts

fall

"I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape - the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter approaching. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn't show." - Andrew Wyeth

Autumn. Washington, DC. I don't know what's more beautiful than the colors or crisp air of autumn? Maybe the sparkling white snow, which has already fallen in some parts of Russia. The vibrant foliage is now out in full swing in Washington, DC and Virginia. The temperatures are growing colder, everything feels fresh and fragrant. As always, in the midst of beauty, evil is lurking in the distance. In America, we are very much thinking of our friendly neighbors to the North after yesterday's attacks. I know I have several readers who now call Canada home. There's nothing to say about these deranged extremists, or "lone wolfs" as we call them in the States. Such people are now lurking in all Western societies, carrying passports from the very countries they wish to destroy. Waiting to unleash attacks, which are almost impossible to prevent. I see no way to handle it, or ensure public safety. I know the Canadian spirit and sense of community is very strong, and not easily broken. I just wanted to send a short note to express condolences to the country of Canada...now added to the list of others around the globe where terror has recently reigned down.

I don't know what happened in Canada but if it's a Tsarnayev-brothers-type attack it just goes to illustrate how beautiful democratic countries like the US and Canada have been destroying themselves with their kindness and openness to foreigners by giving their citizenships to people who hold on to alien values.

Yes, living in open, tolerant and kind societies sometimes is a double-edged sword. The culprit in yesterday's attacks was actually born in Canada. Just a complete derelict, with a prior criminal record. A drug addict with no hope or purpose in life. These are the precise individuals the extremists target. They have nothing to lose in life by dying or going on these suicide missions. Easy prey.

Such events become etched in your memory. I'll never forget the uncertainty and panic immediately after the September 11th attacks in America. In some ways, everything changed after that day. Security in government places, airports, etc. become more cumbersome. I anticipate the same will happen in Canada, esp. with firearms because I understand the guard who was shot dead at the National War Memorial didn't even have a weapon to defend himself against this madman.

fall and autumn
Hello. One question. Just interest.
You've used word 'autumn' and you live in US. I though that's brittish. So... ;-) When do you use 'autumn', not 'fall' in US?
//Don't want to correct your(!) English. Just interest.

Re: fall and autumn
Hi! In America, the terms "fall" and "autumn" are interchangeable. Both words are frequently used to describe the current season. There is no specific rule as to when one term should be used over the other. It's just a matter of preference. I like the word autumn better because the term "fall" has multiple meanings. :)

Minus 10 Celsius this morning in Moscow. No snow yet, but cold and strong wind. A rehearsal of winter. A little bit too early for my taste.

I think there isn't a way to completely prevent attacks by these kinds of 'lone wolfs' without turning into a state of paranoia - and you really don't want to live in paranoidal environment. Best to think of that as of a kind of a disaster but made by man not by nature.

Anyway, peace be with Canada.

It's so cold already! I would love it. When I was in Russia last Sept./Oct. it was not very cold, and even in Feb. the weather was mild. About the attacks, I agree. You absolutely can't live in fear or panic. Otherwise, the evil has won. We are well aware in America that another big attack is likely at any moment, but it doesn't prevent most people from going about their lives. As they should.

I fully empathize Canadian people. Sorry, that any country can't prevent such attacks. But evil people can't destroy the spirit and kindness of great democracies.

A lot of Islamist terrorist organization ISIS became citizens of Canada, the EU, in England. Them very much.
United States citizenship is difficult to obtain. Islamists in the United States have? I hope not ...

Of course, we have Muslims in America. A person can't be denied citizenship solely on the basis of religion. This goes against everything for which America stands. However, most people practicing Islam in the States are good, normal humans. I don't know what percentage of Muslims in the U.S. are considered extremists? But there have been several instances of Americans trying to leave to go fight with ISIS. They are typically lost souls, with criminal records or no direction or purpose in life. Look at this article for one example - teenage girls trying to leave America to go fight with ISIS in Syria!! http://www.cbsnews.com/news/colorado-girls-apparent-bid-to-join-isis-renews-terror-recruiting-fears/ or http://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-many-americans-have-joined-isis/.

I join to your condolences to the Canadian people. I am very sorry.
I am against the terrorism and wars.

But I want to ask, did you wrote any condolences to the hundreds of thousands of Iraq’s citizens or Vietnam’s citizens and to many other people who had become the victims of the USA army?
When your country, which has much more powerful army forces, send one racket after another, without any meaning instead to let poor people have the "democracy", destroys the authority and push the victims to the havoc of civil war?

Основы права
If you are familiar with international law, it should be know that the murders committed by the army are not considered as murders. Soldiers of your country are always kind, brave and noble and enemy soldiers are vile and insidious. This knowledge is the basis for the rule of law on this planet.

Мои идеалы вечны
It's very interesting. Every time something like this happens, there are always television liars who convince citizens "It's an attack on us, our values, our way of life... and so on." Pathetic lie of brazen liars. Terrorist attacks are a response to external or internal policy of the government, the terrorists do not care about my values and ideals, the death of people is only a means of affecting government for them. But the government always uses such events to steal my civil liberties. When some sicko arranges shooting on the streets, he did not attack my exalted ideals, just people around, it is exactly the same as psycho is biting medic, he is biting medic, not democracy.

Re: Мои идеалы вечны
You are obviously confused the terrorists with psychos. Second ones don't attack freedom and democracy, but first one sometimes do, sometimes don't.
