Christmas-Market-26677148

Yesterday, I booked tickets for a short holiday trip to France to visit one of my best friends living in Bon-Encontre. This is a small, rural town located in Southwestern France. The trip will be very short, from 4 December - 8 December and the plan is to visit the countryside of Bon-Encontre and take a day trip to Bordeaux to visit the Christmas Market and city. The main thing - to spend time with a dear friend I haven't seen in person for over three years. The last time we met was in Kyiv, when I visited him during the summer of 2011.

Already, America is gearing up for the holidays. Soon, we'll celebrate our annual Thanksgiving feast and turkeys and other festive foods have already arrived in the grocery stores. Smells of cinnamon, cakes, cookies and pine trees will soon follow. During the last week of the year, I'll probably take a week long journey somewhere in the U.S. Which State are you most interested in reading about? Let me know.

Do I have any readers living in the Bordeaux area? What is interesting to see there? Not castles, because I have seen so many in my lifetime! Where will you celebrate the New Years' holiday? In Russia, or abroad? I'm always so jealous of the long period of vacation Russians get during this time!

Thanks! Does your village in England have a Christmas market? In America, we don't really have good ones. It's a pity because I love them!

Hello, Shannon! Nice to read you again. I'd like to ask you about american Thanksgiving. Is it celebrated only around a family? Is it a quiet holiday?

Hi! Every family celebrates differently. Some have small, formal gatherings. But my family is huge, and we have an informal celebration. Sort of "pot-luck" style, where everyone brings a dish to the feast. I wrote about it last year. See this post http://peacetraveler22.livejournal.com/59811.html. :)) I'll probably take photos and write about it again this year.

The people of Russia and the USA don't fight, only our politicians do. :) Holiday time is beautiful for me! So fun, however I always feel sad for people who are lonely and have no family during this time. :( Do you stay in Russia for the New Year's celebration?

I've been to Paris three times! It's a magical place, but I'm curious to see more rural parts of France. So, on this trip I'll finally get to view a different area.

Sorry, I don't discuss politics on this blog. It's a losing situation, esp. for an American writing in a Russian community. There can be no civil discussions, and in general politics is not a subject of interest for me.

I forgot about this gift card. :) Around the holidays, I'll have to do another reader contest and send a prize. But I need a creative idea for a contest.

I like to read about SF or LA.

Hello! I don't like LA at all, and doubt I'll ever return there. However, San Francisco is beautiful. One of my favorite cities in the U.S. But it's too expensive to fly there around the holidays, so I need to travel to a State closer to Virginia (on the East Coast) or the Southern U.S.

God day!

About the State, first of all, I wanted to write about the Maine (because there's a lot of forest, as in Finland or the Mari El (the subject in Russia)), but you already had a post about Maine, but it was winter, it would be interesting to see the Maine in the summer, maybe in the future))
And now I could offer Rhode Island because it is the smallest State, and simply interesting.
If anything, it's just options. :-).

As well, in my opinion, long holidays (from 1 to 8 January, and previously from 1 to 10 January), in Russia it is not very good, because a lot of people in this country will just use alcohol in huge quantities, because they don't have the money (and desire) to spend this time is different, and some of them are in the hospital or die (this happens every year) due to alcohol poisoningIt is an example, and there are other problems associated with the long holidays. I think the non-working days in January should be no longer than three days (from 1 to 3 January), the more lengthy non-working days in January, the more alcohol abuse, aggression, violence, etc.

Of course, not everyone in Russia spend the first days of January eating vodka buckets and arranging fights with bears :-), but people who spend these days with great benefit relatively little.

Sorry for the negativity, I just wanted to say that the long holidays, it is not always a good thing, especially in Russia, I think there should be a balance.

P.s.
In Russia, there are two interrelated concepts as "place of residence"
and "temporary residence place". In practice this works (or should work) so this is an example, a person born in Moscow and registered on "place of residence" in Moscow. Then, when that person is, for example, for twenty years, he decides a hoot live in another city in Russia, in Saint Petersburg. He arrives in St. Petersburg and 180 days lives there in a hotel room, but he was required to register (in the police or similar authority) within the first ninety days after his arrival in St. Petersburg, and such registration is registration on "temporary residence place", but he has not signed up. This man has lived these 180 days in St. Petersburg and moved to his home in Moscow, it was not fined, simply because he was lucky. But in fact this man has violated Russian law, and for that to be punished and may impose a fine in the amount from 62 USD to 104 USD (approximate amount on today's exchange rate), and this is because he has not signed up for the "temporary residence place" in St. Petersburg in the first 90 days of their stay.

This system reminds me of a visa in an easy way, in fact the Russian tourists (citizens of the Russia) inside the country not raised special problems because of this law, but the very fact that this law and punishment exist is a poor indicator.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was away all weekend and did not have Internet access. Your comment "arranging fights with bears :-)" made me laugh on this sleepy Monday morning. :)) This whole "registration" procedure for Russian citizens is difficult to understand for an American. We don't really have anything like that here. Btw, as you mention, foreigners must also "register" once they arrive in Russia. It's a big pain in the a*s! In America, once you enter as a foreign tourist, you are free to roam the whole country as you wish.

Maine is beautiful! It's one of my favorite U.S. States. Very peaceful and relaxed lifestyle there and, of course, I love the freezing winter temperatures and snow. Have a nice evening!

Gorbachev? :) I remember him very well, standing side by side with Ronald Reagan near the end of the Cold War. This was during my teenage years. I can't imagine that Putin will ever be so cordial with any Western leader. Btw, Gorbachev recently resurfaced in the news because he warned the press that the world is on the brink of the next "Cold War." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-29966852

It's a pity that your trip is so short, this region is definitely worth spending much more time.
Is it your first time in France?
Waiting for the story about your visit!
I live in Toulouse, you're not going to visit it?
You can go to Dune du Pilat, if you have time - not far from Bordeaux.

Unfortunately, my friend couldn't get a lot of time off of work and I plan to travel in the U.S. at the end of December and need to save my vacation days. I will fly into Toulouse, but I'm not sure I'll have time to really explore it. If we decide to spend a day in the city, I will write you. :)

I'm afraid this is one of the rare good things in Russia. Btw AFAIK though in Poland days between Christmas and New Year are work days people usually take them as days off to have a kind of long holidays. Don't you have this tradition in the US?

Nov. 11th, 2014 04:12 pm (UTC)
It's true, in America only Christmas day and New Year's day are holidays for most people. We get those days off of work. Most places dismiss employees early on Christmas and New Year's Eve though, and of course many people take the last week of the year off with vacation time. I would love to return to Poland! I really liked my short visit there last autumn.
