Graffiti Artists in St. Petersburg

graffiti
©MadeinKazan

I miss this city and still follow local news. I read over the weekend that city authorities have invited young graffiti artists to paint old trams and buses in need of makeovers. The project will take place in May during St. Petersburg's annual international graffiti festival. During my trip, I remember seeing a lot of graffiti consisting of curse words or other foul statements. However, I don't recall seeing much artistic graffiti in Russia with the exception of some beautiful murals in Vyborg.

Personally, I love this type of art and welcome it in cities and urban areas. Sometimes it's the only sign of life and innovation in areas that are otherwise very gritty, dark and grey. In America, you will find the normal worthless graffiti but there's also a lot of beautiful street art. If you read my post "Strange Pennsylvania" you will see this mural which sits in a market area of Pittsburgh.

And for those interested in the topic, I highly recommend the film "Exit Through the Gift Shop." It's a thought provoking film on many levels, questioning the political and creative value of graffiti. You also get a glimpse into the mysterious world of Englishman "Banksy", a pseudonym for one of the most famous, political and prolific graffiti artists of our time.

Do you want to see such art on local trams and buses or do you consider it an eye sore?

This artist very cool! Btw, you know you introduced me to Banksy back in the day during one of our pool discussions. Good times. :)

Моей несчастной России нужен капитальный ремонт, а граффити ...
У нас есть поговорка: выкрасить и выбросить (о ненужной вещи).

Next time I go to Detroit for business, I'll maybe do a post on the urban art there. Lots of graffiti and murals in this city!

What about these? :)

www. google. ru/search?q=%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%B4%D1%81%D1%82%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%86%D0%B8%D1%8F+%D0%B3%D1%80%D0%B0%D1%84%D1%84%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B8&hl=ru&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:ru:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=T0JKUdbjDorIsgbQv4DICw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoATgK&biw=1440&bih=780

Remove spaces from the host part of the URL or just input подстанция граффити request to Google and switch to picture view.
These graffities are mostly on electric power and hot water distribution substations in Moscow and other cities.
Some of them were officialy ordered and sponsored by those cities' authorities.

BTW on some of these pictures you can clearly see REALLY typical urban landscapes of Russia with pavements, houses, people, etc., not just the oddities :)

Totally agree, there should be more street art everywhere, especially in big Russian towns. It brings lots of life and character into othewise dull urban areas. I live in Melbourne, Australia, and here street art became a tourist attraction in itself over last years. Posted some pictures in my blog several months ago: http://descolorio.livejournal.com/6319.html
By the way, I spent some time walking around Vyborg a couple of years ago. Haven't seen any murals at all, must be something new or seasonal.

матрёшка street art in Australia! :) I traveled to the Sydney area about ten years ago. I think the Vyborg murals have been there a long time. I'll include some photos of the murals when I write my post on the city and try to figure out when they were created.

Sure, we're of the same opinion! In some areas of the States there's also a lot of graffiti related to gangs/gang activity. Complete eye sore.

Some painted houses in Russia (town Ramenskoe, not far from Moscow).
It's not quite a graffiti, but...

I don't think I've ever seen entire apartment complexes painted like this in the States. Usually, it's just a mural on one side of the building or a wall. But these complexes, very bright indeed!

The town of Borovsk (150 km from Moscow to southwest) has a number of great frescos painted on the house walls. Look here.

These are amazing, extremely detailed. I especially like the one with the globe and the scene with the family in the cabin. I've stayed in cabins like this in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, surrounded by black bears! Thanks for sending.
