Imagine...

outback

My favorite song of all time is "Imagine" by John Lennon. Such simple lyrics, yet so profound and meaningful, more so today than ever. "Imagine all the people, sharing all the world..." Here it is - A Ukrainian alexcheban, a Russian macos and me, an American, all enjoying a pleasant evening of conversation, stories and steaks. The image to me is very powerful. Pity that so many are blinded by nationality, hatred and idiocy, with the inability to separate ordinary people from the politics of their nation. What if...the majority of humans behaved as the people in this photo? Imagine...yes, what a beautiful world it would be!

Also, a special delivery for me last night. My favorite Russian treats! Yes, I like some Russian food, and here is the evidence. :)
photo

Pleasant evening to all! In the unlikely event you don't know the song "Imagine," take a listen and contemplate the lyrics.

A great song, really. It expresses exactly what I feel the world should be. Well, "The Beatles" was among the first sounds that I heard in my life anyway:)) And "Imagine" in particular was among the most popular audio material for studying English at school, as we hadn't had much else:))

It's good study material for English, because the words are easy and so simple. I'm a big Beatles fan also. I wonder if there are people who actually have never heard this song? Seems almost impossible to me.

Isn't this song about the dreams living in communism?
At least these words make me believe so -

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can

Communism? This is not the way I interpret the song, but this is the beauty of music! Each person can find their own meaning in the words, regardless of what the song writer intended.

In that context about people I like to remember the war's cases, when enemy solders, Germans and French seems, was falsified shooting and was celebrating the New Year Eve together. And after the army authority invented some law to forbid them do it and only kill each other.
What I want to say that it are rich and wishing of power people, which want to rule everybody, don't let normal people to live as they like...

People always make their own choices in life, and the rich and powerful don't prevent this from happening. In some cases, they simply cause obstacles along the way.

Yes, Shannon, I also cannot understand all this fuss around nationality. Some of my acquaintances in Russia say: "If I met an American, I would..." - and they are aggressive without having met a single American, and they even don't want to, expressing aversion. I study in Germany surrounded by Ukrainians, Germans, Turks, Americans, British, Bulgarians, Poles, and one of the things I like here most is that nobody cares where you've come from. Pure contact of personalities. Yesterday was having a small party with two Dutch guys, an American girl and my British friend, and it was so nice to realize that nothing stands in between us. If to remove the language barrier, notion of nationality is just eliminated.

Shannon, are there any stereotypes about Russians in the US, and if so, what are they?
peacetraveler22
Dec. 10th, 2014 06:02 pm (UTC)
Before I traveled to Russia, the only stereotypes I had in my mind were that it's very cold and frozen there (in winter) and people look mean. And, they both were true. :)) I said "look" mean, because it's not common for Russians to be smiling at each other in public, or making small talk. It's different than American culture. Not good, not bad. Just different. :)) But, I once wrote a post about American and Russian stereotypes, here's the link http://peacetraveler22.livejournal.com/34893.html.

Yes, this is a controversial part of the lyrics, but because I'm not religious, and have personally witnessed the damage extremism in religion can cause, I completely agree with his statement. But I understand how religious folks find it problematic. Maybe I already asked you, but are there local Russian shops or restaurants in Baltimore? There are a few in the DC area.

We didnt make the differences between us. We still remember, that we are one nation. A lot of people from Ukraine working hear, in Russia. One language, same traditions. But for svidomits now this view point like red colour for bull. And begins.....
My grandma from Vinnitca, then she became a hero of Leningrade blocade. Till 2005 Ive even cant emagine, that they can seriously forget the past and call themselfs over nation. But grow up the next generation, wich believing new TV. They can.

But you are no longer one nation, and geopolitical relations have shifted. Ukraine - a different country now with very different goals and ambitions, depending on which region of the country we're speaking about. I know, because one of my best friends is Ukrainian and I speak to him, and other Ukrainian acquaintances, frequently about the current war. What they think and feel about it, what they wish for their country...
