Open Vote for Next Journey!

IMG_6756
A few years ago, I let readers pick my travel destination for a short summer journey. The options were Wyoming or Toronto, Canada. Wyoming won, and I spent a few days there traveling solo through the Grand Teton National Park. Amazing State, in which I'd really like to spend more time. It's necessary now to go on a short journey for mental sanity, and I'm torn between two routes. One alternative is to fly to Colorado, because I'm interested in visiting a marijuana cafe or store in the first U.S. State in which recreational use became legal. I want to better understand the rules, regulations and intricacies associated with marijuana sales and use in Colorado. The second option is to go back to my beloved Maine and try to arrange a meeting with Samantha Smith's mother, who still lives there. In addition, there are many cozy beach towns and villages in New England, which also bring me a lot of inner peace.

Which story/destination is more interesting to readers? Vote in the below poll. I have never been to Colorado, so recommendations on cities or places to visit would be most appreciated! Of course, if I have readers living in either Maine or Colorado, this is also useful to know. I will be pleased to meet in person, as always. :) The poll will remain open until Monday, and I'll announce the results next week.

This poll is closed.

Where Should I Go?

Get a Rocky Mountain High in Colorado
68(64.8%)
Pay Tribute to the Legacy of Samantha Smith in Cozy Maine

Yes, sounds like a grand adventure! :) But, it's too far and who will pay for it? I don't have the finances for such an amazing journey at this time. It's necessary to stay in the USA until autumn.

A meeting with Samantha's mother would be very interesting. I vividly remember Samantha's visit to the USSR in the 80-ies. She was almost a legend among the schoolchildren of that time.

+1.
The United States was an enemy country for us at that time. Samantha opened America for us. One girl in my grade had got a book about the visit of Samantha to the USSR, we looked it many times. I was shocked when I found that Samantha and her father died.
Really, do Americans remember now about Samantha?..

Sounds like you skip Yellowstone while being in Grand Teton ????? O_o.... If one would be in USA and will ask me what is a single park to see, I would name Y-s with no thinking a second. You need 3-4 full days to see all craziness of nature there... Than you can drive 212 (Bear Tooth HWY) as a final touch. It is officially rated #1 beautiful HWY in US. I do confirm - we were stopping at every spot just to soak all of these views.
Colorado? Well. Beautiful place too, particularly if you go skiing, but now it's not a season. You can drive it through from Denver to Moab to see Arches and other Canyon Land parks, but it might be real hot there now.

Unfortunately, I was only in Wyoming for about four days. It wasn't enough time to go to Yellowstone. I really want to go to Utah, but the most amazing thing there is all the nature, and people aren't interested in just looking at nice photos on LJ anymore. They need more substance, a story, some hook to grab their attention. I guess if I knew a polygamous Mormon family who would give me insight into their daily life, it could make for an interesting report. :) But sadly I don't.

Both destinations sound very interesting, but I am being selfish - there are many people talking about the legalization of marijuana and many more will write about it in the future, but I doubt that somebody will write about Samantha Smith any time soon, especially somebody who has traveled in Russia.

I have been to both Maine and Colorado, lovely places (I mostly went for hiking/canoeing/meeting friends, so cannot suggest anything really); I am sure you will have a fantastic time whichever direction you choose.

Why do you think Maine will be better for mental sanity? Both places have great nature, which I love. But I'm particularly drawn to the mountains, so Colorado is more grand on this front. Based on my initial research, Samantha's mother lives in the small town of Boothbay, Maine.

When I'm traveling alone, I don't drink or play with mind altering substances. Too dangerous for a female. It's interesting for me from a legal perspective, all of the issues arising from these marijuana sales in Colorado, because it's such a huge influx of cash.

I haven't voted but my pick definitely would be CO. (Maine can actually be hot this time of year. I heard they have blackflies, too.)

Been to CO numerous times. Some highlights (and I mean HIGH) are Trail Ridge Rd thru the RM NP; Mt Evans and Pikes Peak (the highest paved roads in the US); Independence Pass etc. etc. They may rank behind Beartooth Hwy on WY/MT border mentioned above, but not by much. Leadville is about the highest town in the US at 10,000ft. And that's all fairly close to Denver. Farther west I'd love to do Red Mtn Hwy sometime again, Durango to Silverton to Ouray. Telluride is just over the ridge. Many other options...

It's cool in the high country, but a word of caution: You may get the mountain sickness. As for mental sanity, I'm afraid one usually takes one's sanity (or insanity) along. And I hope it's not because of that person from TX.

Speaking of the weed, I remember there's a town named Weed sitting at the foot of Mt Shasta, though it's in CA. They do a brisk trade in T-shirts and other souvenirs as you'd expect.
