What do foreigners think when they see images of the Confederate flag? Please let me know how you perceive this symbol, which is currently at the center of another heated debate in U.S. politics and policy. I'll write about the controversy later, but today I just want to understand how foreigners view this symbol. What does it represent - historical background, or some alternative meaning created by pop culture, music and movies?

I do not believe that any of the people proudly displaying this are not racists actually, but just some kind of "traditionalists". I just don't believe it. They may not hate people of other colors, but they are proud to be not them.

Not true, actually. Modern revisionists insist, that "we werent fighting for slavery, we were fighting for independence", and I know many, that truly believe that bullshit.

To me, historical background, I guess. A part of your national legacy, like "Боже, царя храни!" for some Russians.

This symbol is as alien to me as the former Soviet Union's flag.

For me it is just some kind of archaic symbol of proud southern rednecks or something like that :-) I always thought I have no idea what it actually represents, because I really don't think sotherners really support slavery as a moral value. Must me something else then, but I never understood what that would be...

I find it despicable how the entire nation fell into flag-hating circle jerk. To me this flag has always been a symbol of heritage and tradition. It has nothing to do with hate.

Esp. Walmart!! I could not believe that they agreed to remove all the merchandise bearing this symbol! And my home State of VA will now ban any reference to the Confederate flag on license plates. For me, there's a lot of mixed feelings. I definitely don't think this flag should be waving above official government buildings; however, I don't like suppression of speech, even if I disagree with it. So, if people want to buy confederacy t-shirts, flags, stickers, it should be their choice.

Frankly speaking, without your explanation I didn't exactly know what a flag it was. (Now I know ;))) In any case, for me it is just a part of the American history, and it causes joy when I see it because I appreciate when people know and are interested in their history!

It is history.
Like red-blue-white Vlasov`s or black-yellow-white imperial flag in Russia. No criminal, just history!

Re: It is history.
Hmm ... Russian red-blue-white flag was here long before Vlasov...
I'm not a big fan of it but please do not connect it to this traitor.

To be honest, I think this is the evidence of the possibility to start again a civil war in your country.
For me it is a sign: USA have problems. They were not solved in 19th century.

When I see this flag, I always recall "The Dukes of Hazzard" movie:) And it's connected for me with things like cowboys, rednecks, rodeo and so on. I have never been to USA and I understand that I have a lot of stereotypes about it, but I just saying about my vision.
