Who will take an ice bath next week?

What does the Orthodox priest say to you, or he simply watches? I don't understand the rituals behind this Orthodox tradition, but the wonderful feeling of being half-naked in the snow, I know well. How refreshing to work up a sweat in the banya, and jump naked into the flurries, with your bare ass and breasts hugging the snow! Your body shivers, you see the vapors of your own breath swirling in the forest mist, and toes tingle! Probably one of the authentic Russian experiences I'll remember most from all my journeys. :) Do nonbelievers also partake in the Epiphany festivities? The spectacle seems entertaining to watch, although I'm certain many people view this behavior and tradition as foolish.

Is part of this ritual the act of suffering? If so, then ice and frigid waters are necessary. :) Are there unusually warm temperatures in Ukraine this year?

I was very surprised to find out that my coworkers here do the same thing ones a year! It calls Polar Bear Plunge(usually for charity) and they "plunge" in lake Erie in January. I work mostly with military folks so they are tough(women do it too!).

Yes! In the U.S. and Canada, there are many of these polar bear plunges for charity. It's great, but the temperatures in my area don't get cold enough for it. Otherwise, I would participate. :)

Don't Russians also move from the banya to jump in a lake during the summer, or this is only a winter tradition in cold waters?

Not me, certainly!

At first, all water changes its structure at these days (as per scientists), second, originally it was in the Jordan river and it is far away to the South...

I've been to the Jordan River in Israel, and saw people being baptized there. It was actually quite dirty, stinky and disgusting, at least at the spot I visited.

peacetraveler22

Does it offend you that I'm interested in your habits? This is natural human curiosity about the world and customs, and my curiosities aren't limited to only Russia. To answer your other question - yes, some Russian behavior is exotic for an American like me. :)

My colleagues who are muslims and catholics take part in this ritual just for fun, for example with their russian friends.
They like it, because it "refresh".
Noone died or take sick.

You know, I noticed that your readers are mostly nonbelievers. Frankly speaking nowadays churches are overcrowded on Sundays or in holy days, people go with children and do it regular.
Surely, some people blame priests for scandals (expensive cars and watches))), but for believers the main thing is communication with God, not with "managers".
There is a real problem, but let's remember that this institution was destroyed 100 years ago and now Orthodox Church should build it from the ground up. I take it for "problems of growing" as in business and for crisis of management.

Well, I'm also not a believer, and strongly dislike organized religion. Yet people are free to worship and believe as they wish. I'm not trying to close churches or prevent prayer for those who find comfort, hope or solace in it. I like these dips into icy waters or snowy landscapes for the same reason - it's refreshing! :)

Never tried it but my wife did.

But generally in banya it's desirable to cool after being in a very hot steam room.
In Moscow there is no ability to jump into snow but we have a device ... a can with very cold water hanging high which you can turn by pulling a rope.
