Happy holidays!

355733_900

I'm now recovering from a busy and delightful Christmas weekend. Many days off, too much food, sweets, laziness and relaxation. My favorite ornament in this photo was placed on the freshly cut tree, as in past years. And I can say that as I age many things in life become very routine and traditional, especially at times like Christmas. All of this is comforting, to know that you will be surrounded by loved ones, properly cared for and supported in life. Yet there is always something more to strive for on a personal level, new places to explore, ideas to pursue and people to embrace. At the same time, we must learn to cut off toxic humans in our circles, and I've become quite good at this in recent years.

I want to thank all of you who sent me wonderful Christmas messages, and I return best wishes for you as the main holiday has not yet occurred in your region of the world. Recently I was chatting with a reader and discussing some uncertainty about life, about the future...he suggested that I'm having a mid-life crisis, but I vetoed this notion. The truth is that I've always been the type of person to question things, and wonder what my purpose is.

I'm already on my fourth career in life, now ready for the fifth, though not sure what it will be. All of these existential questions were present even in my 20's, but my reader highlighted a significant point - "The difference is that in your 20's you feel like you have an endless life, but in your 40's you understand that you actually have already lived HALF your life..." It is true, of course, but I want to say that when I look back on all of my years, I am quite pleased. There have been so many experiences, I've helped a lot of people in my legal career, and really not had to struggle much. For all of these things, I'm eternally grateful.

As we enter 2017, I want to say that even my optimistic outlook on life has dimmed a bit. I do not look forward to our upcoming inauguration, or new leader. In January, when Donald Trump is sworn in, I will feel a real pit in my stomach, concerned that the country is heading in a very, very wrong direction. I don't want to live in a nation with walls, for this can bring no good. An open mind, curiosity about different cultures and people - all of these things are what first led me to Russia and brought me in contact with many of you. We cannot focus on all the things divide, instead there should be a global strive to unite.

The world is big, beautiful, it is full of kindness that we never hear about. I have seen it everywhere in my travels, and we must gravitate toward this light. It is my hope for all in 2017. Happy holidays to you, and best wishes for the New Year! How will you celebrate?

P.S.: I am writing on LJ less and less, but post frequent updates, thoughts and photos on Facebook and Instagram. You can find me here and here. :)

С прошедшим Рождеством и наступающим Новым годом!
По поводу Трампа - не переживайте, разум должен возобладать.

Как будем праздновать Новый год? Как обычно, в лучших русских традициях - выпивка, икра, веселье )))

Yes, life goes on, regardless of who is President. :) Enjoy your holiday, caviar, and warm, pleasant emotions for the New Year!

Hi Shannon!
We've survived Christmas! I'm still not hungry yet but it's time to cook again. Mentally preparing to make "Olivye" and I want to make my favorite "Shuba"(that salad with herring and beats) for New Year :)
I've got a nice tool box from Santa. Very happy - I can organize all my instruments now!
What did you get for Christmas?

Great! I am so tired of food. :))) Well, I was a good girl, as always, so my parents spoiled me. :)) I got a lot of gift cards to restaurants I like, some nice sweaters, scarves, hats, slippers to keep my feet warm. Happy cooking! :) Best wishes for the New Year! Oh, and a gift certificate to this place - https://www.musepaintbar.com/. It is very cool. You have wine, and learn to paint at the same time. I will go there one weekend with my sister, to escape the men in our house. :))

I don't want to upset you but you've always lived in a nation with walls. I know some guys who tried to go to the USA for decades but they can't. There was always a huge wall between them and their dreams called american immigration law. They simply don't allow them in the USA. Why? There's no answer there's just a huge silent wall. The only way for hundreds of millions of people in the world to go to america is to become an illegal. But you know - they can't go there either by definition. The only thing Tramp is going to do is to obey the law. Is it actually a reason to hate him?

Yeah, and remember what I told you before - you have huge walls even inside your country. The biggest one is the wall between black and white americans.

I am against ALL walls. :) They can come to the USA, marry an American woman, or come here illegally. I do not care about illegals, as long as they are productive, and contributing something to our society, not just sucking up benefits. I have helped many of them stay in the country, under various immigration measures. And how will you celebrate the holidays? Be nice to your wife? :))

Happy holidays to you, and best wishes for you too!

"How will you celebrate?"

I will celebrate at home together with family at first and at a forest camp with friends after.

"P.S.: I am writing on LJ less and less"

Why? Sad to hear... :(
I have a facebook page but don't like its interface, it feels too complicated to me... and will you speak at Facebook?

Forest camp? Do you sleep in tents, or some type of covered lodging? Sounds great, as I am always drawn to the forest. I do not see the purpose to write on this platform anymore. The audience has shifted, or either left. The only way to attract attention, or gain a large audience here is by discussing politics, sex, banal topics, or if you're a woman to show your tits and ass. None of these fall within my interests....

Since you wished Happy Holidays can you please explain that atheist hype about Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays ?
peacetraveler22
Dec. 28th, 2016 07:12 pm (UTC)
There is no hype. I just said Happy Holidays, because it covers both Christmas and New Year's. :) For friends in the U.S., I always say "Merry Christmas!," except to my Jewish friends. :)

In USA you recover from food but if you celebrate it in Russia you recover from drinking

We do not drink so much at Christmas in the U.S., but on New Year's Eve there is tons of drinking and partying going on for a lot of people. This is why I usually stay locked inside. :))

Happy New Year, Shannon!
First we celebrated Russian time having a video call via skype with our parents and then we went to a restaurant where we celebrated "Polish" New Year with our friends and colleagues from Lublin.
It was first time in Poland when we celebrated New Year coming not at home; it was rather amusing to get acquainted with how Polish people celebrate "Noc Sylwestrową" (Silvester's night - it is how the night from the 31st of December to the 1st of January is called in Poland), I think I'll write a couple of words about it in my next post on the culture topic.

Happy New Year to you also! :) It's great that you got to have a muti-cultural celebration. You are the best type of immigrant, as you are making an effort to integrate into the culture of your new home. This does not mean you lose all connection or tradition from your former homeland. Unfortunately, I think a lot of Russian immigrants in the USA simply move to immigrant neighborhoods, communicate with only other Russian speakers, etc., making no effort to know, or learn anything about their new country. Yet accepting all of the benefits it provides to them with open hands...

Why "no way"? Instagram has tons of beautiful and talented photographers, and there are many interesting discussions and people to follow on Facebook also. You're in control of what you see there, just like LJ.
