Bloggers

Sometimes I see bloggers who have over 3,000 people in their friends' list. How do they filter through the tape each day and what is the purpose? I suspect it has something to do with the mysterious rankings system on LiveJournal but I don't know. I have absolutely no understanding of social capital and other statistics unique to this platform. It's not of primary concern for me because my blog isn't my profession, but a hobby at this point. I'm convinced some bloggers at the top have learned to manipulate the system and numbers, thus the rankings don't always correlate with quality of content.

Who are your favorite bloggers and why? I want to read more interesting blogs focused on travel, photography and social issues and need recommendations. Currently I have only 32 friends and my favorites are:

fritzmorgen: This is my newest discovery, a real master at creating hysteria on LJ with his wild posts about America and other Western countries. Great defender of the motherland and opponent of the evil West. However, an interesting and reasonable person if you communicate with him. If you need some entertainment and want to understand the lunacy of some of your compatriots, I suggest you read the comments to his posts.

lovigin: A true master of photography and artistry. I don't know how his images are manipulated but a real feast for the eyes and soul. Romantic and poetic writing style. I like it! Hope to meet him next time I'm in Moscow.

zina_korzina: Great writer. Her blog content primarily is focused on life, art and culture during Soviet times.

inamora: Young beauty writing about her affair with an older married man. Some find her crude and obnoxious, but I like her writing style and stories, even though she frequently attacks women of my age. :) A common pattern in my life of being attracted to those who are different, and her lifestyle and views on sex, relationships and men are almost entirely the opposite of mine. This makes for some fun discussions on her blog.

macos: Frequent travel partner and good friend. Travels to interesting places, always finding unique sites and people along the way. His blog is mostly photo stories about his travels. Makes a real effort to communicate with readers, although he is sometimes very stubborn. :)) Overall, a kind and interesting person. Good man.

varlamov.ru: The first blogger I discovered on LJ and most popular. I primarily read his travel essays and am not interested in all the transportation or urban infrastructure posts. His stories from Africa are most interesting to me. This continent I really want to explore but who will go with me? None of my friends have an aching desire to vacation in any African region, and I will not go alone.

Also, I recently received a proposal to ride the rails in Russia. I want to do it, but I don't know when or where. Maybe in early winter. Where should I go? Who wants to show me their city? :)

Лучше в зиму сидеть дома. Обещают в России холодную зиму. У нас будет зимняя Олимпиада, даже природа помогает России.

Step by step you do comprehend craziness of the russian web social communications. Yes, russian ЖЖ users want a lot of friends just because of the rating or so called SC (social capital) will grow the more friends they have. Nobody bothering to read his/her friend's tape, of course. But with high SC you can get an offer from advertisement agency or simply from wealthy political party as United Russia to post some nonsense about the West, because this ruling party believe the more bad news russian people will hear regarding situations in foreign countries the more russian government seems better for them.

Of course, I want a lot of subscribers to my blog also. The more the merrier, as I'm always interested in communicating with different people and hearing different viewpoint. I'm speaking about those who subscribe to thousands of pages, which would be impossible to read on a daily basis. It's clear there is some correlation with the rankings, otherwise they would not do it.

Hi, Sharon. Thank you for the interesting blog, full of sincere emotion and useful information. I read it with great pleasure, improving my English and find out more about the American (and intelligent woman's) view of the world simultaneously.
I am glad to recommend you some of my favorite bloggers who may be interesting for you, too:

1) pechkeen.livejournal.com - Dmitry Pechkeen: existential psychotherapist, highly professional, witty philosopher, very attractive man and enlightened Buddhist + great Russian language

2) ivand.livejournal.com - Ivan Davydov: poet and journalist, nice observer, describes the details of modern Russian life + great Russian language indeed

3) ludmilapsyholog.livejournal.com - Ludmila Petranovskaya: family psychologist, she is engaged in family care for orphans. I'm always very interesting of her analysis of the situation in the Russian society from the point of view of the clinical psychologist. Very precise diagnosis forever.

Especial pleasure to read the comments at this blogs.

As for your question about which Russian cities to see...
I left Russia a few years ago and now I can offer you a small winter trip to the Crimea (after you eventually get cold in Russia:)
