Recommended Viewing - HOMELAND

My dear readers, sorry I've been so lazy writing my travel reports. They are extremely backlogged, but will return next week. In general, I've recently been lacking motivation in most areas of life. Overall, a sense of malaise and slightly depressive state. I guess it will soon pass, as it always does. How do you snap out of these life phases?

I've also been totally consumed with the cable television program HOMELAND, now in its fourth season. I'm late to the party, as the show has received a lot of awards and praise for the past few years. The series follows a mentally-imbalanced CIA Agent, Carrie Mathison, in her quest to chase terrorists around the world and keep her job, despite the fact that she has psychiatric issues. Very good writing, acting and plot twists on the show. I'm almost done with the third season, and will soon be caught up. In America, almost all television dramas revolve around political/inter-government dynamics, medical students/doctors, and lawyers/the legal world. HOMELAND is suspenseful and intriguing because you see how the core U.S. agencies - the White House, State Department, CIA and the FBI constantly battle with each other on objectives and implementation of national security plans. Of course, it's just for entertainment but I believe the themes closely mirror the inter-dynamics of American government agencies in real life.

I highly recommend viewing if you're looking for a new program to watch. You must pay close attention to each episode, and it's necessary to start from the first season of the series Otherwise, you will be completely lost as each episode builds on the other. The current season is set in Kabul, thus all of the black burqas in the cover photo. Remember I once wore one of these garments, and briefly wrote about the experience here. The picture below - yep it's me, wearing a burqa in the Virginia forest. Feeling like a floating ghost...

Which American television shows do you watch? Have a nice weekend!

Четвертый сезон не нравится...

Why are you writing me in Russian? I know you speak English, so I'll respond in English. :)) I'm not at the fourth season yet, but I thought the beginning of the third season was very boring and disappointing. But, suddenly it got better when they found Brody in the hole. That's the episode I watched last night. :) The Carrie character - she is a complete maniac!! :)) Now, I'm waiting to see what happens with her pregnancy. Don't ruin it for me! :)

Ops... Sorry, you don't know Russian language-:) maybe it's time to start learning?-:)
Nov. 14th, 2014 02:50 pm (UTC)
I did study the Russian language, but became lazy and there's no motivation for me to learn. I have a nice, and big enough audience here now. Writing in Russian would only attract more trolls and controversy to the blog, which I do not welcome. I thought I sent you the post before, but you can see my awesome Cyrillic writing here. :)) http://peacetraveler22.livejournal.com/23512.html

Btw, this show HOMELAND is based on the Israeli series Hatufim (Prisoners of War). Do you know it?

It's funny! This show was on when I was a child. I remember it. :))

Thank you for your recommendation. I've never watched this show before, so I decide it's to late to start. I think here in UK we are watching approximately the same things, just sometimes a bit later. I usually watch the shows, that hepl me to learn something useful, for example, legal vocabulary, because of my job as a court interpreter.
About mood swings: I use to have them earlier, but after menopause they all stopped. When I had have them, I always thought: I don't let some stupid chemicals in my brain to affect me. And reading of good books helped me to manage everything
Nov. 14th, 2014 03:07 pm (UTC)
In my early 30's, I used to have very bad panic/anxiety attacks. I took medication for only a short period of time, and then they went away after about two months. I've never taken any pills since. I think something chemically changed in my brain during that time that got me a bit off balance. It was so strange that my demeanor completely shifted, because I'm normally a calm, laid back person. But I would not wish those panic attacks on anyone. It's the worst and scariest feeling! I'm glad you have found some coping measures that worked for you.

I agree, the 1st season was definitely the best. So suspenseful!! Third season dragged a bit, esp. in the beginning but is now getting better. I'm about half way through.

Aww, Shannon, Homeland is on again! Before I read your post, I didn't know that, which is good - I should be preparing for my medical school entrance exam. Well, though it's going to be hard (I'm a huge fan!), I should be able to refrain from watching it until I'm done with the exam in the end of next week!
The good thing is that now I have something to look forward to! Yay!
Nov. 14th, 2014 03:36 pm (UTC)
You watched all the other seasons? I recently became addicted. I watched it for ten hours last Saturday, almost the whole first season in one day. I didn't even get out of my pajamas for the day. :)) Good luck with your medical exams. I remember studying for the bar exam after law school. This is the two day licensing exam all lawyers must take in order to practice law. It was the worst period of my life. Studying 8 - 10 hours for two months. But I passed, and the rest is history! :) I hope the same for you!

How to Get Away with Murder

How to Get Away with Murder...this is next on my viewing list. The main actress - Viola Davis - is extraordinary! And I like most of these legal drama shows, although they do not entirely depict American law accurately. :) Best one was "Boston Legal," because it also had a lot of comedy. I watched the first few seasons of Mad Men, but then lost track. Love the women on there and their classic wardrobes and style.

I mostly watch news, travel and science programs, not the tv shows - they are too slow to me and overloaded with adds. The only one that picked up my attention was BBC's Sherlock Holmes, but I watched all seasons recently almost at once. It's charming.
Nov. 14th, 2014 05:01 pm (UTC)
I mostly watch news and travel shows also, but on cable there are no commercials. :) So, you will not be bothered with them when viewing this show.
Nov. 14th, 2014 05:03 pm (UTC)
We are at the 2-nd season now. I like this show! Fascinating plot and the acting is superb
Nov. 14th, 2014 05:07 pm (UTC)
Yes, the show keeps you guessing. It's nice to sit and watch all the episodes in a row, because your curiosity and questions can be instantly satisfied and answered. Once I get caught up, I will have to wait one week in between shows. The second season is very good also! I finished it on Monday. :) It's a cool dynamic between Carrie and Saul. Because his personality and demeanor always stays exactly the same (calm and expressionless), and she is totally unstable.
Nov. 14th, 2014 05:10 pm (UTC)
Well... maybe you'll say I'm depressive all the time :) but now I completely lost interest in following the plots of any series.
After all my practice I feel like I'm empty inside and don't really care what will happen, especially if those twists of the plot were specially invented by a writer.

The only things which can turn me on are real scientific inventions and perspectives or _real_ mystical secrets.
Something that really can change the life. Such stories about spies or criminals don't fall into this category.
Nov. 14th, 2014 06:00 pm (UTC)
I like all these spy/espionage dramas. I always said if I was ever with a Russian guy, I would engage in role playing spy games. :)) Fun.

Hmm... Really surprised to know it Carrie[:)]s on. Thought 3rd season was just a logical conclusion and there will be no sequel. Claire Danes delivers absolutely perfect bi-polar disordered character and it's so exciting to watch her playing, but overall plot has gone worse from season to season. Anyway I'll definitely watch the 4th one.
Nov. 14th, 2014 05:58 pm (UTC)
I don't know how the 3rd season ends yet...:) I'll find out tonight probably. Nothing can beat the plot of the first two seasons. Remarkable and so well acted. They kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.Claire Danes, the actress playing Carrie, appeared in one of my favorite TV shows of the 90s. It' called "My So Called Life." Not sure if it's well-known in Russia. She's always been a high quality performer.

My hubby and I started watching Homeland but there was too much cursing for our liking, so we stopped.
We like sci-fi and fantasy tv shows, but good ones are rare. Currently we are watching Haven, Lottery, 100, Grimm, and the Doctor Who (though it is British, not American :). I was into Grey's Anatomy until the last season.
Nov. 14th, 2014 06:45 pm (UTC)
I like Grimm! I never really noticed all the cursing, maybe I'm just immune to it. :) There are some graphic sex scenes, but not too many.

Gosh! Homeland is unavailable on Netflix. Will have to bootleg it from torrents.
Nov. 14th, 2014 06:55 pm (UTC)
I'm watching the show through my cable provider's "On Demand" option. They have all of the seasons there to view instantaneously. I think the online streaming selection of Netflix is very poor. They need to seriously update it. So, I have a combined streaming/mailing membership.
