Hello from Middle America!

In all my travels, I've never met anyone as crazy or eccentric as Ron Lessman, pictured here. Owner of a farm in the middle of nowhere - also known as Kansas! :) I left Virginia on 26 December for a big road journey through some Mid-Western States, with a lot of miles already covered and four more days to go. Along the way, many interesting sites, people and small towns, which I'll tell you about in the New Year. Sorry, but I don't have time to write text or process mass photos on the road after driving such long routes and rising to early wake-up calls of 5 a.m. almost every day. So, just a quick teaser of some things to come....

1. Surreal to drive through Ferguson, Missouri. There really are no words to describe the events that have transpired there over the past few months. Many complicated social and legal issues at play, for which there are no easy answers. However, I will try to write a post about my visit and impressions. We drove through the entire neighborhood, including the main street on which the looting, fires and protests took place. Now, almost all open wall space in the town is covered with murals, social messages, and support for the community. This sign is painted outside a local Chinese restaurant.

2. Polyamorous, cannabis smoking, peace loving hippie we encountered in Missouri. He invited us to spend the night in his unique house, smoke some weed and discuss all the complex issues surrounding life, humanity and love. A real free thinker, completely into an alternative lifestyle and living in one of the most unique houses on the planet...

3. One of Ed's yard decorations...maybe it will intrigue you? :)) He's living in a decomissioned missile base, with secret tunnels, and a huge warehouse where a nuclear weapon previously sat, pointed directly toward Moscow at the height of the Cold War and Cuban missile crisis.

I'll tell you more about these people and the small towns of the Mid-West in January. Until then, I hope everyone enjoys their New Year's holiday with friends, family and loved ones. See you in 2015...!

Wow, even in Kansas! (We usually try to do our best to skip these two dusty empty spaces, NE and KS, as fast as possible.)

Kansas is very cute once you get off the highway! :) So many small towns and nice people. However, Middle America is definitely lacking beautiful landscapes. Ugliest part of America, in my humble opinion.

Сегодня значимый день в истории страны
This dude has the largest pipe for dope smoking i've ever seen. Cheech and Chong would sell souls to the devil for the chance to inhale the smoke through this device.
One time I worked in a factory that has manufactured bombs and shells, they were green, without the hammer and sickle, a work of art at the picture was heavily influenced by Coca-Cola 8)

I can't even imagine the conversations you would have with this guy! :)) He's actually playing a flute in the photo. He also has a huge collection of tribal drums, and he gave us mini concerts throughout the bunker. I'll write about him in the New Year, but you'll get to see his life on macos' blog first. He's a machine, sitting at the laptop each night processing photos and writing texts like a good boy. :)

Re: Hippie
There are a lot of news articles and interviews with him from various U.S. sources. He's definitely one of the most unique people I've met. :)

Now we're in Birmingham, Alabama. Probably one of the ugliest U.S. cities I've been to, but important from a historical perspective. Tomorrow I'll visit some historic landmarks in the U.S. civil rights movement. Happy New Year to you and your family! Maybe I'll make it back to the UK in 2015. :)

Can you buy such properties in Russia or former Soviet bloc countries? The man we met sells former bankers and silos to people interested in converting them into private homes/living spaces. I'll write a big post about him in January.

Thanks a lot! Enjoy the festive day in Russia! How will you celebrate? I know it's the biggest holiday of the year for most people there.

Thanks! You've already entered 2015, but for me there's still six hours left in 2014. :) I hope your immigration dreams to Israel grow to fruition in the new year! Cheers! :))
