On the frozen river

FullSizeRender (1)

At one point during the last Russian journey, we had to make a choice in the route. Drive over a frozen river, or take a direct route on pavement. The choice was mine, and I picked the frozen way because for me there's still a great thrill in experiencing such places.

When we arrived at the point, there were large signs with weight limits for the cars and passenger restrictions. The sign warned that only one person should be in the car during the crossing. I can't understand the logic of this? The entry point was at the top of a hill, so the non-driving passenger would be forced to walk down a very slippery, icy slope to reach the other side. Well, my fellow traveler decided to ignore the weight restrictions (our car was over the limit), yet abide by the one passenger rule. The result - I carefully maneuvered my way down the icy path to the other side, carrying a heavy backpack full of camera equipment.

But the post is not about that. Often I feel the need to visit some distant region of the world to be reminded of who I really am. There is no mystery about why such experiences are cathartic. Stripped of your ordinary surroundings, daily routine, refrigerator full of food and closet full of clothes - with all this taken away, you are forced into direct experience. Such direct experiences inevitably make you aware of yourself in a way that is often lost in the daily grind of life. Incredibly aware of who and what is most important in life. This is not always comfortable, but it's always invigorating. How about you? Where do you go to escape and clear your mind?

P.S.: I don't know the name of this place, but a friend informed me it's the Sukhona River.

The reason was a safety.

Why is it unsafe to have two people in the car rather than one? Of course, I understand the weight restrictions for safety, but the addition of one passenger in the car doesn't seem to impact safety in my view.

How did this episode make you aware of who you are?

That I'm an incredibly patient person most of the time. Rather than fight, or have drawn out discussions over disagreements or small annoyances, I simply remain silent, just like the landscapes around me at this moment. It is not worth the friction, stress or energy to have constant squabbles with friends or lovers. As you get older, you learn to not worry so much about small things. :)

Being in the world - moving from the point A to the point B - is just my method to clear my mind. And I rather prefer catamaraning in May along some not too fast river in my native Kuzbass. Not this May, alas....

Cool! Is it possible to go white water rafting in any Russian rivers? Are there Class 5 rapids there? I did it once in West Virginia. It definitely wasn't relaxing, but very fun! It's impossible for me to clear my mind in big cities, I need to be in quiet, nature settings usually. But everyone is different. :)

Me too! But American style. A big RV parked in the wilderness. I once wrote a post about it. :) What percentage of Russians do you think have dachas?

Cleaning the registers?
I go to canoe trips. 9 days in COMPLETE wilderness (yes, there places you can name this way in usa), living in a tent, cooking on fire, eating fish and seeing almost no people. It cleans your mind well. If you want absolute 101 with nature - just cross Canadian border. Miles of nobody so to say, bears and moose only. It is not a campground, not even close to that.
And I reserved entry permit for this year already!

Another way is to spend a week in Moscow. It's a very different world for me now.

The major indicator of good rest is that I could not remember my system ID and password. It's a serious deal and it happened several times )))))

Re: Cleaning the registers?
Where do you take the canoe trips, in Minnesota? I got a taste of Canada when I visited the Yukon, pure nature - mountains, wilderness, remote dirt roads. It was heaven! To spend a week in Moscow? This is like a form of torture for me, stress inducing! It's awesome you got the permit. Congrats! We have so many wild, secluded places in our own country. Probably it's necessary for me to explore more of them, rather than hopping on planes all the time to cross oceans.

In a Montenegro resort - with no one to telk to (and not making acquaintances), no gadgets (except an e-book), no contact with my office and no raiment, walking every day alone along the empty beach (twice a day, almost 3 km one way and then back); plus some wine in the evenings, and night walks and nigh bathings... :)

It looks nice, but I would grow bored with this environment after one or two days. Night bathings? In the sea, or bathtub? :)

I'm afraid I can't agree with you that a life in a wild nature without any facilities and comforts clears my mind. In the opposite, it makes me realize how much I need all this things and that without them a life is not a life but just a survival. But when my life is calm and comfortable enough I sometimes feel that I am ready to explore some new horizons (but of course, only within civilization!). And to clear my mind I read books and watch movies. This helps a lot to forget about my usual problems. (When I feel really bad I need to watch something extremely scary, about people in huge troubles, catastrophes and so on, and this helps me a lot to understand that my life is good, not bad!) And I like to walk in our neighborhood like I used to do back in Russia (remember me post about planes?), look at beautiful houses, nature and so on. This revives me a lot too!

This is an interesting psychological strategy - to watch some catastrophic or scary movie to feel better about one's own life.

I go for a hike in Red Woods near home . I had enough experiences in Russia. I can just close my eyes and run it in my mind and send thanks to God, again, that I made it our alive.

I just do meditation :)

It's not exactly what you are talking about, it's not a challenge and rarely a self-discovery now.
I'm still in comfort of my kitchen :)

But the energy flow directly clears my mind and sometimes does some supernatural effects too.
Sometimes it causes strong emotional states like total love or fear, or overwhelming sexual arousal with androgynal feelings :)
Sometimes the vision opens and I see distant landscapes or strange creatures...

"overwhelming sexual arousal with androgynal feelings :)...I can't understand this. So, you're aroused by yourself, or with the concept of another androgynous being?

You havent' get used to this way of life - this life for you appear to be unlifeable/

They are not the Dandy Crocodile/ :-)

I feel the same as Crocodile Dundee in New York City - overwhelmed and frantic. I do not like it there. I prefer the Russian wilderness instead of the chaotic environment of New York City.

If I want to escape of civilization I just leave our city for my country house. I have had power there since 2010 only and haven't other utilities. I haven't refrigerator (it's faulty), I even haven't good mobile connection there:)))))))

Diving. Time is slowing down when you hover in state like weightlessness at depth of 10-20 meters ...

May be Dacha, but when I can be alone there. I like going to Dacha in winter, when I walk the path across field and silence around me.

For the town - it is chinese tea ceremony. Just sit and brew good tea, and be concentrated on this process ... Alone or in with some friends ...

I also like visiting the dacha in Russian winter! I did it last month, and even went to the banya and jumped naked in the snow! :)
