Equality - A Dirty Word for Russians?

feminism

Sometimes it seems the term "equality" is a dirty word for Russians. I can say for instance that many people crawl into the comments of certain stories and accuse me of being a "feminist," simply because I haven't followed a traditional path in life. I don't subscribe to the formula that marriage + babies = happiness for women, although this is certainly true for many females. There are many factors to the equation, each individual is a unique being, and there will be different calculations throughout one's lifetime to reach the magical sum of "happiness." This appears to be a radical concept for a lot of Russians, who are programmed to see things only in black or white. I was reminded of this fact when someone recently described the content of my blog as being filled with "feminist bullshit." It's a strange comment and characterization of my blog, most likely written by a miserable, bitter person who is simply jealous that I have a lot of freedom, experiences and adventures in life. Envy is a very dangerous poison!

The saddest tunes in life are sung by those who march to the beat of another drummer, rather than their own, simply out of societal pressure. I don't define myself as a feminist, but if you look in almost any dictionary, the word feminism will be described along the following lines - "the doctrine of advocating social, political, and all other rights of women EQUAL to those of men." Of course, there can never be true "equality" in any society or between genders. There will always be the wealthy and poor, and men are almost always physically stronger and more powerful than women. This is part of their charm, and most women (even me!) crave masculinity to a certain extent, the sense of being protected and surrounded by a strong, supportive man.

However, it seems the term "feminism" has been twisted over the decades to mean something evil or outrageous, when in fact the core objective is good in my view. I doubt that many fathers would be pleased if their daughter studied hard, got a good job, and earned much less than her male colleagues, when in fact they share the exact same qualifications and professional skills. Over the years, feminists have aimed to balance inequalities like this. The term is thrown around too loosely, associated with militants, man-haters, unshaven armpits :) and the dreaded fear that men are emasculated when women are on the same playing field. Sorry, but I think only weak men are intimidated by powerful, independent women, wishing to box them in or mold them into subservient creatures with no individuality, ambitions or hobbies outside of adoring and caring for a man and child. These are extremely important tasks in life, deserving of the utmost respect and women who dedicate themselves to being "stay at home" moms are worthy of adoration. To me, it's the hardest job on the planet.

What do you think? How do you perceive "feminism", and what is wrong with women earning the same as men, or females being given the same opportunities to be whoever or whatever they wish? I don't want to sit in the shade, hidden under some umbrella or walking in the shadow of another person. I want to be the one to walk in the sun, with my partner gladly holding my hand, each of us supporting the other through all of life's obstacles, sorrows and elations...and, yes, I'll still cook, occasionally wear a sexy dress and torture my feet in high heels along the way. :)) Is this such a radical concept?

Yes, I know. :) But what is the problem? It's bad if a woman earns the same money as a man, or if a woman doesn't have babies or get married in her lifetime?

Most unlikely. It`s easy to pretend that everybody who oppose you is an envious loser. Very often people write just for the sake of...writing. To be the first to comment. Like me at this moment. It`s a joke, certainly.

There is feminism, and there is chauvinism. And there are a lot of related problems. Some, for example, resent the fact that they give seat in the subway. Others that are not inferior. And what to make of the man? Option "never sit on the train" is not OK.

True "Equality" is impossible, not least because we're physiologically different, have different needs and opportunities!
In a particular area should be positive discrimination of women, some (dangerous for the birth of future children work, for example) - negative discrimination. Увы.

I think it's absurd to expect a man to give you his seat on the subway, simply because you're a woman! :) I never demand such things, but of course there are exceptions. For instance, if someone is very old, or a woman has an infant and baby bags, etc. and it's difficult to stand. Elders and the handicapped should be respected and cared-for, regardless of gender. Btw, what's an example of "positive discrimination of women"??

You are right about Russians, they use the word "feminist" to offend.....even women!
The problem with them is, that men degraded to the point of nonexistence(there are good ones but it's more like an exclusion from the rules). Women are strong, they basically keep this country from falling completely apart. They rase children practically in all women environment (fathers don't participate financially or emotionally most of the time), teachers pay is so law, that only women can take these jobs, so they are everywhere, they work the hardest lower paying jobs, deal with sexual harassment on a regular base, and they hate it! They want to be week and feminine, so a big masculine Prince would come and help them. They truly believe in princes! And they don't want to jeopardize even a slight chance(what if somebody say:"Look at you! You can do all this things yourself! Why do you need a man? You are like a man!" So every time somebody says this word "feminist", every woman imagine huge amounts of work that women should do without any help from men! And men think that they would have to do some work that women are doing all alone right now(hoping about the Prince), so they don't like it too!
I think that is what happening.....

Many of my female friends in Russia constantly complain that "there are so many beautiful girls here, and very, very bad men!!" It's a pity, but I can't confirm the truth of the statement. I've never dated a Russian man, I'm sure there must be a few good ones left. :)

The below describes one feature of anti-feminism.

There is a law in sociology, the law of minority discrimination.
The larger is a minority, the stronger it is discriminated.
It is clearly logical: the majority feels less danger from a smaller minority and reversely, more danger from a larger minority.

Women may be considered as a minority in active society, in the workforce.
In India, women are a tiny minority n the workforce, so they can be even elected presidents and appointed prime-ministers.
In USSR, women are a majority in the workforce, so they are fiercely discriminated and practically never obtain high positions in management.

In Russia, many people associate the word feminism with being a pervert, a lesbian. It is an offensive word to say towards the women who tries to complete something on her own. Like my first boyfriend said: why would you need driver license? Are you feminist or something?

This all is language of competition.
What you have written above is based on presupposition that there still should be competition between people.
This is why you want to be strong independent, with equal rights, etc.
THAT presupposition is wrong. I want society to be free of competition and fear.

When the INTENT is to cooperate and do whatever you can for the benefit of others and the whole society then there is no feminism or any other movement to grab more rights for a certain group of people.

Russians critique feminism not because they do not want equal rights for women. In fact, Soviet Union gave women all possible rights at once, in 1917, first in the World, and all generations since then grew up it that reality.

But we critique feminism for ultimate selfishness, for wishing more rights only for themselves right now and not thinking of consequences.

Women who are responsible would care about Earth, environment and society.
They would honestly evaluate what they can give for their nation and the World to be proud of themselves.
They would understand that their freedom of everything is just procrastination and end up only in lots of photos put on websites, for years and years.
No sense, no result, just "freedom" ...
