How to Spot a Russian...

Over the weekend, I was sitting at my apartment pool, relaxing in the hot sun when I was disturbed by very loud voices. Immediately I could tell that it was some of the Russian residents living in my building. For me, it's easy to spot Russians in the crowd, perhaps because I spend so much time communicating with them in my personal life and in this blog. They most often talk in a very loud tone, which sounds aggressive to my English trained ears. Why is this? This is not only at my apartment, but also a perception based on numerous personal encounters with Russians in the USA, on airplanes and throughout Russia. It's not an insult, just an observation. :) The topic of the conversation can be extremely friendly, with a loved one or friend, yet still sound like an argument to me because I barely understand any Russian words when they are spoken by natives.

Other signs that the person at my pool is Russian - older women almost always wear bikinis, despite their physical shape or appearance. Very old, overweight females stuff themselves into these types of bathing suits, and it's fine. About someone else's appearance, I have no opinion or say, and if they're comfortable in this type of clothing, more power to these ladies! :) However, it's not so common for old women in the States to wear bikinis, I very rarely see it. Similarly, Russian and European men at my pool almost always wear Speedos, or tightly constricted swimming trunks. It doesn't matter that they have huge bellies, I suppose it's just a cultural difference in swimwear attire. Something like this...Read more...Collapse )

How to spot a cat? It has a tail.
As for swimming suits. Being frequently on a foreign sea shores (I don't mean Turkey & Egypt that are most popular among Russian tourists), I have mentioned the point that almost always a tourist wears the clothes to feel himself comfortably, but not to be 'the stylish'. And there is nothing strange in a fact that the swim suit, that was used for swimming in the ponds, lakes and rivers of your native country, is the same one to lay on the beach and swim somewhere abroad. There is traditional 'inner fashion' in each country and international fashion style that imposed by different brands from NY, London, Paris etc. And I don't think that many people have ordinary swim suits for local usage and a special ones to be 'in fashion' on the foreign beaches. For example, I easily understand Muslim women that want to wear their habitual attires on a foreign beaches. And, of course, I know how to spot an American man on the Russian Black Sea shore: he don't wear Speedos! :)
As for loud speaking. There is a part of all Russians that travels. There is a part of all traveling Russians that goes abroad. There is a part of traveling abroad Russians that you can meet... And so on. While spending my vacation on Maldive island, I learned, how loudly can Chinese speak. Almost all night long. Right at your bungalow. But it doesn't mean that all Chinese people have such habit. The one part of your mind told you so. But another part of your mind dreams that you'll never meet them again when touring. :)

Strange, according to my (and not only) observations German tourists are usually much more loud than the Russian ones (to leave alone the Italians). After having lived for a while in Israel, the Russians seem to me almost barely audible when I travel to Moscow from time to time. By the way, there was a research that states that the people, when travelling abroad, speak much louder than in their natural environment.

Many people said Germans are loud in the comments to this post. But I've never noticed it. I rarely encounter Germans at my apartment pool, Russians are more common residents there. :)

And when exactly did they begin calling men's swimming briefs - speedos?
Jul. 22nd, 2015 02:03 pm (UTC)
This is a common brand in the USA, and we use "speedos" as a generic term to refer to this type of swimwear.

your american swimming trousers are о[who]ительно uncomfortable in the sea (and especially - after).
that's all. folks!

and the russian can be easily recognised by matrioshka, balalika and kalashnikov that he/she is wearing all ove rthe time.

Never seen а group of German teenagers on vacations?!
Oh you missed SO much!
Once upon a time - that is, a few years ago, - me and my wife were having a nice fortnight in Spain, on Costa del Maresme...and one night, we decided to stay in Barcelona a bit longer, to watch their famous fountains to the end... and that meant that we had to take a late-night-bus from nearabouts of Placa Catalunia, to get back to our hotel in Calella.

It was around-about one hour and a half past midnight... we were a little nervous, because it was for the fist time we ventured to return from Barcelona in the middle of the night on our own....nervous and tired, and happy at long last to see and board the bus - I forgot the number.

Very soon we discovered an extremely unpleasant company of two groups of youngsters - German and French; they were tipsy, mixed (both boys and girls), approx. 18-19 years old, and DEAFENINGLY loud.
They roared, cried at each other, laughed, and then these creatures began to SING! It was a sort of improvised competition - German songs vs French....Never before had I thought that the roar of two dozen drunk people in a closed space could be so ubearably loud.
And of course they were aggressive, on the point oh being ready to fight...fight each other, in the first place, but of course ready to beat anybody else in between.

I tell you, it was a torture.
In he end, after half an hour of all this, the driver stopped the bus, went out in the passenger compartment and said, very emfatically: "Vale!", abd after that it didnnt stopped aktogether, but at least we got to Calella alive.

In general, in my opinion, Spaniards behave themselves much better and in a more civilized manner than Germans, at least abroad.

i can easily spot Russians in any foreign country.
As well as Chinese and Indians :)

By the way, not only by their appearance and behaviour, but by their accent as well, provided they try to speak English:)
Indian accent is so forceful, it practically causes ache in the ears.

i'd like to talk to you, my friend :0)))
