How to Spot a Russian...

tourists

Over the weekend, I was sitting at my apartment pool, relaxing in the hot sun when I was disturbed by very loud voices. Immediately I could tell that it was some of the Russian residents living in my building. For me, it's easy to spot Russians in the crowd, perhaps because I spend so much time communicating with them in my personal life and in this blog. They most often talk in a very loud tone, which sounds aggressive to my English trained ears. Why is this? This is not only at my apartment, but also a perception based on numerous personal encounters with Russians in the USA, on airplanes and throughout Russia. It's not an insult, just an observation. :) The topic of the conversation can be extremely friendly, with a loved one or friend, yet still sound like an argument to me because I barely understand any Russian words when they are spoken by natives.

Other signs that the person at my pool is Russian - older women almost always wear bikinis, despite their physical shape or appearance. Very old, overweight females stuff themselves into these types of bathing suits, and it's fine. About someone else's appearance, I have no opinion or say, and if they're comfortable in this type of clothing, more power to these ladies! :) However, it's not so common for old women in the States to wear bikinis, I very rarely see it. Similarly, Russian and European men at my pool almost always wear Speedos, or tightly constricted swimming trunks. It doesn't matter that they have huge bellies, I suppose it's just a cultural difference in swimwear attire. Something like this...Read more...Collapse )

то что вам не нравится чья-то одежда - не имеет никакого значения.
вашу одежду же никто не обсуждает

That's right. People should be free to wear what they want, I did not state otherwise. I only let you know my personal preference in men's attire. :)

Being a Russian myself, I can confirm: yes, Russians are often too loud in their speech.

But I've never heard louder people than the British (English at least). And it's not observations made somewhere in provincial pubs. My 'first time' was in centrally located London pubs. OK, I know, the pub is a special place, but still I couldn't compare that experience with anything like that that I could've ever met in any other country.

I have been to London and traveled all through the UK, but didn't notice loud speech honestly. I think it's just the tone of Russian speech which is easy to distinguish, because it sounds much "harder" and the same with German and Slavic languages in general.

I had to go to jacadi to get Speedo for my toddler. It is so much more comfortable plus it is easier to wear under his shorts, when he goes to the pool.

My 7 year old nephew will not wear speedos, even when he took swimming lessons he wore long trunks. Speedos are more efficient because they dry faster. :)

Why? What's so offensive about this post? It's merely my observation about some cultural differences between Americans and Russians. I have lots of nice stories about Russia in my blog. Read those. :)

The il!usion of "aggression" in speech is real and has objective reasons to it. The tones of Russian speech are different, they go up and down differently. Listen to the European Portuguese, for some reason their speech is so like Russian phonetically and musically that it's easy to mix them up even for a Russian or a Portuguese if they hear it from some distance or indistinctly. Also, try listen to German, some dialects might sound rude to your English ear as well.

Right now I am at a Portuguese beach. Practically every woman is in a bikini, so I belive you are decribing not a Russian quirk but a European one. Or it's just white Protestant American who are too "modest" -- that is think on it too much, obsess about seeing a bit of someone's flesh higher than shorts or a t-shirt. Try not to be bothered by it, they are not thinking of you when they choose their clothing.

As I undestand it, speedos are more comfortable for swimming.

They should not think of me, or anyone else, when picking their clothing! :) I didn't imply this. In general, yes, Americans are more modest in dress, but there are exceptions. There are plenty of young, attractive women running around in tiny bikinis and almost naked on American beaches also. :)

Soviet swimming culture grew out of competitive swimming, where Speedos' were pretty much a requirement. Beach dudes in old (think before WWII) photographs wore long trunks, in Russia and in Europe. That said, I hardly ever see Russian men in Speedo's at Cape Cod beaches popular with older Russians, so your pool and beach observations may be just an odd sample, here in the US.

I will return to New England in a few weeks, to vacation on the Maine coast. I love this area and can't wait to relax! Perhaps I'll make a report about American beach attire when I'm there.

How to spot Americans:
1. They are very loud in public places like museums, restaurants.
2. They don't know how to use public transportation. For example: never go to the back of a bus, never asking people in front of them if they need to get out on the station, just pushing you a side and jumping of the bus. Ask, people, ask and you will receive, I will move and let you pass. God! (Sorry, but I find it very annoying and lack of culture).
3. If you ask them where are they from, they will tell you city, but not country, if question is asked outside of US. "Oh, I am from Springfield." Springfield? Hm, Springfield in Canada?
4. Oh those fanny pack, shorts, white socks with sandals and hawaiian shirts. Screams "American!" to me.
5. And the last one: terrible terrible swimming shorts! After getting wet they don't give a place for imagination. Keep it simple, man, wear speedos or sunga!

Yes, you're right about most of these. :) Esp. #2!! I'm guilty of it each time I travel on the crowded Moscow train. I can't keep up with the herds of humanity or frantic pace in these metro stations. Americans are used to cars, not buses or trains.

what swimwear do American overweight women wear? I don't remember women in the US wearing anything different (except maybe when they don't wear a swimsuit, they usually don't even go to the pool).

Googled it, found this http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/jessica-simpson-plus-size-fringed-halter-bikini-top-brief-bottom?ID=2092919&CategoryID=34050&LinkType=#fn=SWIM_STYLE%3DBikini%26PAGEINDEX%3D1%26sp%3D1%26spc%3D7%26ruleId%3D%26slotId%3D7 Isn't it the same thing as shown here?

Sure, some overweight women wear bikinis. I was speaking mostly about older women, it's not so common for them to wear bikinis in the States, regardless of whether they are thin or overweight. And for certain most American men don't wear speedos!! :)

These are okay, I just don't like form fitting swimwear, where a guy's penis is easily outlined. :)
