How to Spot a Russian...

tourists

Over the weekend, I was sitting at my apartment pool, relaxing in the hot sun when I was disturbed by very loud voices. Immediately I could tell that it was some of the Russian residents living in my building. For me, it's easy to spot Russians in the crowd, perhaps because I spend so much time communicating with them in my personal life and in this blog. They most often talk in a very loud tone, which sounds aggressive to my English trained ears. Why is this? This is not only at my apartment, but also a perception based on numerous personal encounters with Russians in the USA, on airplanes and throughout Russia. It's not an insult, just an observation. :) The topic of the conversation can be extremely friendly, with a loved one or friend, yet still sound like an argument to me because I barely understand any Russian words when they are spoken by natives.

Other signs that the person at my pool is Russian - older women almost always wear bikinis, despite their physical shape or appearance. Very old, overweight females stuff themselves into these types of bathing suits, and it's fine. About someone else's appearance, I have no opinion or say, and if they're comfortable in this type of clothing, more power to these ladies! :) However, it's not so common for old women in the States to wear bikinis, I very rarely see it. Similarly, Russian and European men at my pool almost always wear Speedos, or tightly constricted swimming trunks. It doesn't matter that they have huge bellies, I suppose it's just a cultural difference in swimwear attire. Something like this...Read more...Collapse )

First photo — is it Gagra? I was born there and I don't really care about swim clothes of strangers from my childhood. It was rather difficult to buy swim clothes at soviet shops so many people wore what they could buy but not what was fashionable and trendy.

I can easily spot Americans in Canada. They are very different from Canadians. I mean an average American versus an average Canadian.Generally much louder, both in clothes and in speech. They point at things and people with their fingers and eat much more junk food ( generally - much fatter).
I liked playing this game in Montreal Botanical Gardens - I would spot a little crowd of English speaking people and try to guess who they are Canadians or Americans. Tell my friends about my guess, get closer, eavesdrop to their conversation - ta-da, I was always right. And Americans read French signs in the most hilarious way.

Loud tone is not russian character at all. American usually dont make difference between nationalities and think "If he came from Russia he is russian". Guess you dont even know and even cant imagine, but just few years ago if you say in public "I am russian!", you may go to jail (282 of the Criminal Code). If ru-speaking talks in vey loud tone, you may be quite shure he is not russian. Just ru-speaking.

Я к примеру живу и работаю среди людей, где трудно понять кто есть кто без вербального контакта.
Акцент выдает "земляка", а в остальном человек ничем особо не выделяется.

Russian men 30 and older: a t-shirt ALWAYS tucked in classic fit neutral tone denim pants + leather belt! and a leather jacket (gross!).
Russian women I would say 35 and older almost always have one not-so-obvious thing in common: big gold "USSR style" earrings with stones.

I've never understood why so many Russians still wear jackets in the middle of the summer when it's so warm! :) Maybe it's just a habit to grab a coat anytime you go outside.

А чего американцы в шортах плавают? Это же очень неудобно. Какие-то не свободные люди. Навыдумывали себе смешных ограничений.

When I was vacationing in Spain, we were approached by the citizens of this country and immediately asked a question about Russian. They did not doubt that we are Russian. It was not in the pool and on the beach. We then also learned to dress in a crowd of distinguished Britons and Germans. Later, when I came to Israel, to me, no one spoke in Russian. When I said that I was a Russian, people were surprised. In Israel I saw the pool Russian people dropping plastic cups, talking very loudly and disturb others.

Еще американцы очень плохо воспитаны. Не уважают чужую культуру, даже когда находятся за границей. Вот, например, Обама обняла Королеву Великобритании - это верх невежества и неуважения у чужой культуре.
