Злобные Русские Птицы!

In the middle of a grey, depressing village on the River Volga, I found myself reliving a scene from the classic Alfred Hitchcock film "The Birds." Do you remember it? I stood alone in a deserted town square, trying to photograph a decaying old church, when I was suddenly attacked by a flock of angry Russian birds!! It was so unexpected that I began to scream out of shock, even though I have no fear of birds. Of course, my travel companion didn't run to my rescue, but instead snapped a photo from a distance. This is the natural reaction of a top travel blogger. :)

I wonder what made these birds suddenly attack? It was clear I had no food in my hands, only a camera and bag. Perhaps they were just trying to embrace me on a cold day, and warmly welcome an American visitor to their home? :) There's really nothing favorable to say about the town of Yurievets itself, but next week I will share my impressions, which are still fond and memorable. First, because of this strange bird attack, which I will always remember with laughter. Second, because I met two wonderful locals who were very happy to discover a foreign visitor in their midst. They really tried to communicate with me, despite language barriers, and one of them even showered me with gifts. :)

I hope this photo made you smile, and I wish you all a nice weekend! In Washington, DC, we're preparing for the arrival of the Pope next week, when almost all main roads in the city will be shut down for two days. A real nightmare for commuting, but we must live with these inconveniences so the holy and truly religious can live out a life-long dream of seeing the Pope in person, or maybe even being touched by his hands. Btw, if you know interesting facts or information about Yurievets, please share in the comments. There's not much English language information available about this city. In case you have not seen it, here's a classic photo from the Hitchcock film. :)

Those birds expected food from you nothing more. They conditioned to fly to any person stopping on square.

In winter, the streets are deserted so they are probably desperate for food. I don't think many Russians have been to this town, and it's not on the typical tourist route.

They were hungry.

Yes, this is the obvious answer. :) I hate when you're at the sea, and birds disturb you, begging for food. Mainly I just wanted to share this funny photo because it always makes me laugh.

Once I was attacked by angry rooster. He torn my bag!!! By I know the reason - I approached too close to his harem...

I am thinking about your camera lenses - birds sometimes do not like them, like at the end of my clip

I've been attacked by many animals! Esp. when visiting farms! There appear to be a lot of angry, aggressive pigs in the world. :)) Many of them have run toward me like a raging bull. And in Kyiv, I was attacked by a pack of stray dogs.

I don't take myself too seriously, and easily laugh. :) During every trip to Russia, I'm usually falling on my butt many times on the ice, and I almost always have strange encounters with others, sometimes animals, sometimes humans. :)

Birds angry because the Russian take their food.

Sep. 18th, 2015 03:49 pm (UTC)
Yes! This is a tragedy. Poor birds, and poor humans! I don't understand why the government destroyed this food!! I wish someone could clearly explain the logic behind this decision.

I agree with the previous commentators, I think these birds thought you had some breadcrumbs or something like this to throw to feed them.
I've never been attack by birds; on the contrary, birds and animals are usually afraid of me, so it is a real please for me to feed a bird or a squirrel from my palm.
Sep. 18th, 2015 04:06 pm (UTC)
I strongly dislike squirrels! In the U.S., they are not friendly animals, esp. in city areas where they beg for food. I wonder why birds like you? :)

I'm glad you are alive.

Me too! Otherwise, you would no American blogger to read on LJ. :)

Птеродактили и всё такое
Something exists that is even more tedious than the provincial Russian town in winter.
This is it: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0256415/
Woman breaks up with her fiance, who is very smart and a good and the son of New York mayor. She breaks up with her fiance for her hillbilly ex-husband. It's fantastic cooler than the invasion of Martians.

Re: Птеродактили и всё такое
You like this movie?!? Reese Witherspoon is known as "America's sweetheart" because of her pure image and look. This town would not become less depressive in summer, but the locals tried very hard to convince me, the same as you. One even offered to buy a plane ticket for me to return in summer. Generous Russian soul! :)

:) Nice picture.

And the story reminded me of this one:

Very funny photo!! Birds don't bother me, well except for the fear that one of them will suddenly shit on my head or clothes as I'm walking in the park. :)) They are dirty creatures.

Re: Мерзотная наглосаксонская ты тварь
Russophobia? Yeah, right. That's why I've traveled to the country four times in the past two years, visiting remote corners. Some good, some bad. It's always amusing when people decide to insult me anonymously. I'm in the Russian segment of LJ, because my readers are all Russian speakers, just like you.

In real world you feed birds. In modern Russia birds feed by you.

This sounds like a phrase that should appear on a bumper sticker! :) In the U.S., we love to put slogans and stickers on our cars.

Лютые морозы, птицам нечего есть, тем более таким городским, вот и кидаются с голодухи;) Хичкоку нужно было снимать про голубей:)

I'm still going through all of my photos from the last trip. Kazan was the last city I visited, near the end of the journey, so I was lazy and tired. I don't have many photos from the city, but I will write a report eventually.

In the town of Goryachy Klyuch where we've been on vacation there is a place called like "bird diner".
A special circular paved area where people can feed birds :)

en. wikipedia.org/wiki/Goryachy_Klyuch,_Krasnodar_Krai

Nice place BTW. Looks like an American town with rich houses, almost no sidewalks, warm and sunny climate and mountains covered by green forest (somewhat reminding Seattle area).
