Horrors in the Russian classroom!

IMG_7970 (1)

We all have mentors growing up, people who inspire us to do great things in life or those who instill a sense of profound knowledge and insight. They make us better and more intelligent humans, and can turn an otherwise directionless life and place it back on course. Growing up, I had several teachers who were mentors, and especially during university when I met a young professor who encouraged me to continue writing poetry and other creative works. So you can imagine my horror when I received an email from a beautiful young girl I met during my visit to Ples. She lives in the town of Volgorechensk, and is very studious, speaking almost perfect English, with a dream to study or visit abroad. Completely interested and open to the world outside of Russia. She began to tell me about the things her teacher tells her and other students in the classroom...

First, she informed me that her music teacher told the class that "Americans want to put chips under our skin and make us bio-robots." Another teacher told the students that "America is degrading...American students can't write properly or even hold a pen." Just recently, the kids wanted to celebrate Halloween but their teacher prohibited it on the ground that "Halloween is a foreign and American holiday." There were other stories about teachers discussing American, Russian and Ukrainian policy issues.

I also had a discussion with popados on this topic. He told me tales about his Soviet English teacher, who opened every lesson with stories about the powerful Jewish mafia in the USA and Israel.

What the hell is going on in Russian schools? Are teachers paid to promote anti-Western propaganda in the classroom? To continue to bring up a generation of zombies, who can't think for themselves or have any perception of reality about the West, or other surrounding nations? I don't remember any discussions about Russia during my school days, with the exception of our history lessons about the Cold War. And my nephew who is now in second grade tells me his teachers have never discussed Russia. From an early age, most U.S. school systems try to promote tolerance and appreciation for diversity. I once wrote a post about it here, where I showed a photo from my friend's classroom, where students from different nations and cultural backgrounds were celebrated. Yes, the Russian flag is upside down, but I don't think this was intentional.

553340_900

No education system is perfect. In America, we have high school teachers who f*ck students and are jailed for it. But, I can hardly recall any time during my school years where such ridiculous lies about Russia, or any other country, were told to students. My young friend informed me that her fellow classmates believe almost everything the teacher tells them. Horror! Another generation of xenophobes!! I hope these teachers are the exception, not the norm in Russian classrooms! Otherwise, there is no hope for your country...

Please ask your children what their teacher says about the USA, and report back to me. I'm very curious about the answers.

Yes! It was beautiful in Ples. I will write about this city when I have energy and motivation. It was a winter wonderland. Like a fairy tale. :)

And how does this relate to schools or teachers? Yes, McCain is anti-Russian and a foe of Putin. This is no secret.

Look, this brainwashing machine worked the same 50-60 years ago, when I was a kid. This is obviously USSR 2.0. But at least in old times they had an ideology, they had base promising nice future. Now what? Just building an image "we are surrounded by enemies".

When I was at school (from 1992 to 2002) we never discussed political issues. And my daughter is too young to go to school, so I cannot answer your question, but I'm pretty sure that not all teachers deliver propaganda to their students. But some of them might be forced to do that, especially in small towns and villages where there is no work.

This girl is from a small town, perhaps teachers are more open-minded in big cities. I'm not sure. Of course, there are idiots in every profession, including education, with personal agendas and conspiracies. But this is not just one teacher. She told me several of her teachers say crazy things about America. :(

Even quite educated guys sometimes suprise me with this propaganda stuff. It's TV thing, if you watch it - you got it.
Marina is just lucky to have good internet connection and your company there, as you probably know most of Russians does not speak English.

It's amazing to me that such propaganda still works in a country that has full Internet accessibility. Even if you do not speak English, you can easily use Google translate to read news and articles which aren't distributed by government controlled sources. I'm reading lots of Russian language blogs and websites with the assistance of online translators. So, it is simply the lack of motivation on these students part to discover a different viewpoint or reality.

Sad times
It goes way beyond just schools. People my own age sometimes say crazy things. And not even talking about older generation who only watches main TV channels.
It's scary actually. I don't remember it's being that bad 10-15 years ago.
Those are not opinions, that we all are entitled to, you know, whenever you support or oppose any specific regime, political actions, etc. It is pure brainwashing: "we are superior and everyone else is our enemy". I'm not saying for everyone, but I heard that multiple times.

Well, being a lawer you better ask that teacher too. Maybe smart girl told something to you to please you or that was misunderstanding.

I have no information about such teachers at my daughter's school. But I personally told to my children that Halloween is a foreign and American holiday, literally. Also I told "We don't have word 'wow' in Russian language and that they can use it if they speak English properly. Am I horrible in such case? :) I mean, when it comes to other people, we teach children to respect others. But it is necessary to teach children to respect their own culture and language.

Well, pls Google 'chips in humans for tracking' and let us wait 5 or 10 years. At least we know that such things are already can be used.

Yes, of course, already readers comment that the girl might have lied to me. Why? She is a smart young lady, I spent a lot of time with her in Russia, and have video chats with her on Skype. She has no reason to lie to me about this. Of course, it's fine to tell your children Halloween is an American holiday. But is the fact that it's an American celebration reason enough to not celebrate it, when there is a personal desire to do so? Therein lies the problem.

Here is a qualified non-idealistic look of real politics.

“Great powers can’t get tired because the international order is not self-governing.”
“Let me let you in on a little secret,” said Rice, a Stanford Graduate School of Business professor. "There is no such thing as an international community. There are self-maximizing, self-interested states that will push their interests as far as possible.”

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-11-05/putin-thinks-he-s-vladimir-the-great-condoleezza-rice-says

At least she is saying it straight as it is and it's likely will be staying forever. US is trying to make everybody in the world like them so US will extend the control and markets. Just business, nothing personal.

Russian school is just a reflection of simple idea - do not trust Americans. Kondy explained why, doesn't she?

Great picture!

anti-Western propaganda was at all time high
when I was finishing high school (in the 1980's, old USSR)

anti-Western propaganda did not work back then
and it sure as hell not going to work now
