Groceries for American bachelorette

FullSizeRender (1)

When I wrote about my old apartment and monthly costs for living near Washington, DC, many people asked me about groceries and food. After a trip to the market, my basket typically looks like this. If it's interesting to readers, I can lay out the prices for food and show photos of the types of products available in U.S. stores. However, I can't really understand what types of discussions readers want now? Traffic on LJ dramatically decreased, and the types of posts that now attract the attention of the masses are so idiotic and banal that I can't even wrap my head around their popularity. Is it really so interesting to discuss whether a woman's ass is too big, or whether her legs are too thick?

Please let me know the types of stories you want to read, and I'll do my best to accommodate readers if the topics are also of interest to me. Because the point here is to facilitate discussion, exchange ideas and simply explore how others live in various parts of the world. Also, I'm curious to know how much you spend on groceries per week/month? I can then make a cost comparison with the USA. Thanks! :)

:)) Do they taste good? I like to eat lemongrass, and am growing it in my small garden now. I'm also trying to grow zucchini and peppers in the garden. I like vegetables!

Heh, I have slightly other angle of vision. Traffic drammatically decreased mostly for so called top-bloggers, because it depended on their presence in top charts. The majority of charts contents was what you mentioned above - idiotic and banal topics. It happened because some groups of people joint together in big groups (200+ persons) and go to each other idiotic posts thus boosting each other present-moment popularity. And most of interesting honest bloggers were not able to reach charts. Now the role of charts is much reduced because of new design, that negatively affects on idiotic topic-starters who boost their popularity artificially.

As for me, for example, I don't see any changes in traffic, because my 7000+ readers continue to read my blog no matter whether I am in charts or not. That's what I see. (sorry for my imperfect English)

Most of my readers are also loyal, although it seems they comment less now. Not sure why? As an English writer, my posts only made it to the TOP if there was scandalous content or criticism of Russia. Sometimes, my friends translated my texts into Russian to reach a larger audience, but this mostly brought trolls into the discussion.. I still sit on the old version of LJ, so about the new design I have no clue. Btw, your English in this comment is almost perfect! :)) These top bloggers live in an alternative, very egocentric universe. Trust me, I've met a lot of them. :))

Do you want to show receipt as well? Or this is too personal?

Well, the receipt and costs I will show when I write a full post about the food. :) But, on average, the cost is around $125 for a basket like this. However, it includes items like mascara and nice body wash which I only purchase every few months, not weekly.

Books? There are so many! :) I love poetry and my favorite period of American literature is the Transcendentalist era. Writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Walt Whitman...but it seems these authors aren't widely known in Russia. But everyone there knows Mark Twain! :)) My favorite poets are Pablo Neruda, Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Yeats, Mary Oliver....I constantly read books comprised of travel essays written by various authors. I like Carlos Castaneda, an American philosopher, anthropologist and shaman. He writes very strange, bizarre books about connections with spirit animals and other mystic things. :)) I love many British poets....

Shannon, you have your beautiful style of writing and this is what attracts people to your blog. Hope you will never become a blogger that discusses someone's asses. Personally, I am most interested in topic on social problems and comparing mentality in different countries. Did you notice how many people were surprised you actually wanted to abandon your job and go abroad volunteering. Share your vision of life, don't go down to what is popular or wanted by the majority.

Thank you very much for such a nice compliment about my writing! I love words. :) Sometimes I write too many of them, I'm aware. But I can't control myself. :)) Yes, I was surprised that many people were shocked by my decision, and especially that they think I'm "too old" for this type of volunteer work. It is actually a good topic for discussion - age bias/perceptions in the USA vs. Russia. Here, 43 is still considered young. :))

Costco! I mostly buy toilet paper, paper towels there. It is too much meat/food in bulk quantities for a single person.

Not really. :) I'm brewing my own coffee every morning, and drink it on my way to work. One cup per day. Mostly I'm drinking herbal tea throughout the day (chamomile, lemongrass or mint).

Try grocery store - ALDI.
The quality of food is perfect and the prices are much cheaper.

We have ALDI in my area, but it is around 30 minutes from my home. Harris Teeter is less than 5 minutes from my house, so I'm willing to pay slightly higher prices for convenience, especially since I live in such a congested region where traffic is always a nightmare. My time is valuable. :)

I see you're an avid meat eater. In this basket there is more meat than even vegetables, and no rice or noodles at all.

Now I'm on a low carb diet, and in fact I don't like meat very much. I'm eating mostly greens like broccoli, spinach, salads with a lot of chicken (my favorite meat). But, to diversify the meat selection I also eat beef or pork 1 - 2 days a week. I love vegetables much more than meat. :)

Well, you may try posting on foreign affairs and promote Obama rhetorics about American world leadership to get some traffic. Or discuss new defensive rockets at the edge of NATO... But I do not think you would you like having that angry bird kind of traffic :)))
Also there is HIDE AUTHOR feature in the top... Looks like ban for the top. It helps.
Talking about blogging in general - do you really need to be in a high rank of popularity? What is your motivation to have it? As long as you are not making money on traffic or not in a mission of faith you may value just a limited set of people who you are sharing your views and impressions...

But wait.... there is one theme you probably never touched ( I am not sure though) - the higher education in a scope of different universities, private and state ones, ranking, the methods and criteria of acceptance, foreign student options as well as financial side of it.

In MN we have relatively low food price level, mostly due to lower gas prices mostly due to oil fields in Dakotas. Wisconsin is even 3-5% lower...

Politics is not really an area of interest to me, and I don't wish to have such an aggressive or nasty atmosphere in this blog. Such topics have a way of generating such emotions. It is not necessary to be a top blogger for me, except that it leads to more opportunities for sponsored travel. This is the only benefit in my opinion. However, I've never understood how to manipulate the whole LJ system, or work with Russian companies. It's a totally different way of doing business when compared to the USA, based on my experiences. Now I'm trying to work with Georgian officials for the autumn journey...same thing, everything is unorganized, long delay in responses, unclear terms....

if the traffic the only thing that you're interested in I know what to do. You should go to Crimea instead of Georgia next fall and write some controversial articles and that will be the beginning the huge discussion in Russia and especially in Ukraine and maybe in some other countries. know what i'm saying? you would be famous!
peacetraveler22
Jun. 8th, 2016 04:10 pm (UTC)
I have no desire to go to Crimea, nor engage in political battles. Traffic is not really a problem. The same people read me as always, just there are fewer comments now, and it's difficult to find new subscribers.
