Нью-Йорк, 9/11

Moyer-20010911-002

Today is the same as most recent years on LJ. Some Russian speaking blogger publishes a post about the 9/11 attacks, and everyone jumps in the comments to discuss conspiracy theories or the evil U.S. government, paying absolutely no attention to all the selfless rescue workers, fire fighters and ordinary citizens who sacrificed their lives to save others on that day. It is really what I, as an American, remember most about 9/11. On this point, I read a very disgusting comment by one person - "Я испытала очень смешанные чувства, когда прочитала, как четверо пожарных погибли, спасая по лестнице ожиревшую неходячую гражданку. По мне так не стОило это их жизней."

Last year, I wrote a post about my recollections of this moment in American history, and I publish it again below for those who have not yet read. I don't know how I would have responded if I was on the scene that day. Would I have been selfless enough to sacrifice my life to save another? I don't know, but like to think so...

On this day, there's always a very somber mood in the USA. Absolutely everyone from my generation remembers where they were when they first heard the news of the planes crashing into the World Trade Center. Life in the USA was never the same again, even to this day. On the news this morning, I was reminded of how many years have passed - 14. It seems almost unimaginable that there's now a whole generation of kids who have no memories from that day. They were not even born, or were only small toddlers when the graphic images of the towers collapsing appeared on TV screens. Some of my readers who are in their early 20's probably only have vague recollections of this historic event also. But for others, including myself, there's no escaping these images or the fateful tragedies of so many lives that day.

On 11 September 2001, I was away from my family sitting in a hotel room in Las Vegas. I was awakened in the early morning by a ringing phone, panic on the other end of the line from my cousin in Virginia informing me something bad was happening. At the time, I worked for United Airlines, which lost a lot of passengers and two aircraft in the attacks. Flights were grounded for days, and there was no way back to the East Coast. The only option was a rental car, but there was a long wait for those as well. On 13 September a rental car finally became available, and I began the long drive cross-country with two of my young relatives. We drove straight through, rotating drivers in an effort to quickly return to family and parents in Virginia.

Today there's a real sense of sadness. I'm grateful that I didn't live in my Arlington, Virginia apartment on this day in 2001. I would have seen and smelled the smoke rising from the Pentagon from my balcony. Maybe even heard the impact of the plane hitting the building. Such images and senses would remain scarred in my memory. Human life - fragile and uncertain. Days like today a clear reminder of this simple statement. In an instant, life can change or be taken away all together. Thus, it's always important to live life fully. No regrets. Appreciate those you love and care about, and make sure they know it.

I've always said that life is a series of "what ifs." On this day in 2001, many lives were spared due to common annoyances - a missed flight, traffic, a last minute errand which delayed arrival at work. We can never understand why some people are saved, and others taken. Perhaps it's divine intervention, fate, or simply luck. We will never know the answers.

What worries me today. They (on tv) remember the firefighters, the military, and also the civilians. This "also" does not sound right to me. The attack was on the civilians.

The people you mentioned - they are also civilians. :) Did you live in the USA on this day?

I think i left it once in your blog.
Hope you don't mind if i do it again with a minor change.

In memoriam,

Когда-то это написалось в качестве трибьюта к 9/11
Сейчас - просто оставлю на память.

on the run from northern palace
through the valleys, yellow breeze.....

leaves magenta, story tellers
of September silent dreams

on the Autumn run, all southward,
silent hopes are coming through:
'happy summer, life goes onward'
by this moment seem so true

on the run from northern palace
through the valleys, yellow breeze.....

autumn fate is silent fellows,
YEARS have passed, god bless us....
peace.

Well today is the 15th year anniversary...I cannot even believe it honestly. It really seems like yesterday to me, and I stopped working for United Airlines shortly after this incident. Of course, I do not mind that you share the poem again. :)

I do no think anything about it, or the endless other conspiracy videos on YouTube about this day. None of them change the fact that thousands of people perished...

For a child, such acts are almost incomprehensible. Today, I was watching a program about this moment in history with my 8 year old nephew, trying to explain this day, but he could not really grasp the scale of it. In his mind, it is probably like some type of video game, or action film, not reality. Hopefully he will not live to see something like this repeated in his lifetime...

Surreal for us also. :( I've been to Vegas many times, and it was the only day when the casino floors were almost silent, eerie, as everyone as glued to the TV screens watching events unfold.

I was getting ready to gamble for the day in Vegas, and engage in other forms of debauchery...and after news of this event all that mattered was to return back to the East Coast, the other side of the country, to my loved ones. It's a very long distance, which seemed almost insurmountable in that moment.

I guess I was one of the few users here in zhezhe if not only one who was pretty much close to lose my life in that attack.
I worked as a cab driver and around 45 min before it happened passed the Twins and dropped the passenger off close to them.
While coming back to the base I heard on Russian language New York radio as some listener called and said the plane bumped into the Tower.
Everybody thought it is the small private plane with bad pilot.

I remember well that day. I was in shock and many others also. People watched TV in corridor of our office instead of working and our chefs joined us watching burning Towers. Nobody could think of work when people were dying there. Someone said: there will be a big war.... Another one replied: americans will kill 100 people for each american. We were actually quite angry on this commentor at the moment. However, that is what actually happened. I think that it is rather critical to remember that 3000 civil victims in USA resulted in at least 300 000 civil victims in Iraq. May be a lto more, nobody could count.
I do have a lot of compassion with victims of 7/11, but we need to include into this category all people who died due to improper reaction from US military and personally J.Bush in followed years.

That's right...as I said in a comment above, I do not claim that Americans were the only ones to suffer or lose innocent life as a result of this day. We have not known many personal tragedies, wars, suffering here on our own land compared to others (including Russians, by the way), and readers from many other nations that visit this blog.

We need to remember heroic Firefighters and Police Officers who Gave Their Lives on 9/11 , voluntarily people who helped dismantle blockages after this happens and very sick afterwards.
Also I want to know the truth why these people were killed ? America has changed dramatically after 9/11, who really did it?And where the wreckage of the plane that flew into to the Pentagon, landing gear, wing, engine ...?
