About the "wonders" of women

wonderwoman-1280-9amembargo-1488818748850_1280w

We have the typical season of summer blockbusters here in the USA, and at the forefront is the film "Wonder Woman." I'm not sure if the movie has made its way to your region of the world yet, but I want to say that it was a huge disappointment for me personally. You can read so many online reviews praising this creation as a cinematic masterpiece. Common critiques will say something like this - "finally, a female superhero!", "she is strong!", "the director is a woman!"....and so what?

The film was complete garbage from my perspective. What a pity that with all those female characters, they couldn't make something more thought provoking, highlighting the many layers and textures of womanhood. The actress playing "Wonder Woman" is beautiful no doubt, but weak. Both physically, and from the way she carries herself throughout the scenes, constantly batting her eyelashes, or giving some lost, doe eyed look. This is fine in the game of flirting and mating, yet absurd in the context of a "superhero" trying to save the world from being wiped out from lethal gas.

I understand the masses do not even think about things like this, and are easily entertained by fight scenes and beautiful faces on the big screen...but I somehow crave more! Constantly sickened by the way women are portrayed in Hollywood, and all avenues of mass media. Yes, including here on LJ. :) I very much prefer the way British film makers depict strong, complex female characters in many films.

Have you seen Wonder Woman? Thoughts? :)

If she is considering botox at age 22, then the world is even more demented than I imagine it to be. I think this woman is really beautiful, in a natural, wholesome sort of way. But tastes differ, of course. :)

No, not seen. I prefer oldies, especially movies by Hitchcock and other great directors of "all times".

I don't think you would like this film, based on my impressions of you from the blog and social media interaction. :) Yeah, the oldies are the goodies. :))

I am not watching this kind of "super" people action movies. I fell asleep of them, particularly of "Star Wars", but I still love "Mask", since it has lots of humor.
Just watched American Gods, and was delighted, that's my play.

I like these superhero films sometimes...the X-Men cast and Thor are my favorite. :) I recently watched "Hidden Figures" - what a strong, female cast depicting truly amazing, intelligent women who played such an integral role in NASA and the U.S. space program. Yet I never even knew about them until this film was made...

I absolutely love Gal Gadot and totally appreciate the idea of making female superhero movie (shame on you, Marvel, for not making Black Widow solo film!), but, being a screenwriter myself, I cannot help noticing how weak the screenplay is. They practically remade Captain America with tits. And even Captain's tits were bigger than WW's.

LOL!!! The script and dialogue were truly horrendous! I agree. :) I like Mystique from the X-Men series, as the ability to mimic the appearance and voice of any person with exquisite precision or shape-shift...maybe these are superhero traits I'd like to possess. :)) And I like her mutant appearance, as depicted on the big screen. Let's build a film around her. :)

I dislike comics-based films. Ton of unreal drama in unreal lives of unreal people. And Black Widow as 'good Russian' with face of vodka-drunker.

You do not like to escape reality sometimes, and live in a fantasy world full of superheros, mutants and other make-believe things? :)

I've watched it couple days ago. Gal Gadot is charming and sexy but she is awful actor.
I agree that the movie is garbage. And I'm not talking about depth, you cannot expect it from a superhero movie. It is not impressive visually as well, fight scenes are mediocre, special effects are mediocre.

I agree with you on all counts! The fight sequences and visuals were so lame. She is physically too delicate for this role, and yes, a very bad actor. But maybe she will get better with practice. :) I'm sure there will a sequel to this film...because money, not quality, is always the motivating factor for films.

    Not yet.
But will watch (despite the fact I'm not really into superhero/comics movies).
She's Israeli! and that's enough for me to give this movie an extra credit :D

Well, I would recommend the film "Far from the Madding Crowd" to start with. This is a wonderful depiction of a strong woman, who still embodies a strong sense of femininity from my perspective. And it has a very complicated love story, which mirrors reality, not some fairy tale. :)

In the USA, it is very expensive to go to a movie theater. Between $10 - $15 dollars. So, if I pay for the movie, I will watch it until the end hoping for some return on investment. At home, I would have cut this movie off after the first half hour. :))

I didn't go but my husband went to watch it with his co-workers.
The funny part is that this is how he calls me in our everyday life (he thinks I look like her! haha) :) Maybe because I can load my kayak on top of my car without any help. lol.And go kayaking on my own.
Anyway, she is a positive hero in my eyes now!

I think it is a compliment to say you look like her! And how nice that you found a man who appreciates your fortitude, ambition and other traits, when too many other males are threatened by them.

Just a regular Hollywood movie as thousand others. I was expecting more from this film after some laudatory reviews. However, I have been mostly disappointed in it.

Yes, normal Hollywood garbage. In recent years, this garbage dump has become even more epic. As society and humans become more vapid and stupid, so do the films which are meant to entertain them.
