teacher

Greetings! Sorry for the long absence, but it appears everyone is on summer vacations, and there has been no time to write. Remember how I once told you about my childhood ambition to be a teacher? :) It seems life sometimes comes full circle, and I'm now in the final stages of completing my TEFL Certification course to enhance teaching opportunities abroad.

Do any readers teach a foreign language - Russian, English, or any other native tongue? Or, have contacts in this field? If so, I would be grateful for your comments to the post. As I mentioned a year ago in this post, I have been contemplating leaving lawyer life and moving abroad for at least six months to teach. Almost all options have been explored - from the Peace Corps to Teach Learn Georgia, the government-backed initiative to teach rural Georgians English. However, these do not seem like a good fit for me, for various reasons.

There are plenty of options for native English speakers to teach in Russia, some of them pay quite decent, but I can't envision myself living in Moscow, or even St. Petersburg, long term. The highest paying jobs are in Asia and the Middle East, but these regions are not of particular interest to me, and money is not the motivating force behind this experience. Or any others in life.

My primary focus at this point is Georgia, perhaps offering private lessons to children, or "business language" lessons for more advanced students, utilizing my lawyer experience. In this country, the wages are so small that survival will only be possible with the financial savings I've accumulated over the past year.

Any insight, advice, or recommendations about the pros/cons of teaching abroad are welcome! And I hope everyone enjoys the final months of summer, before we transition to my favorite seasons of the year - autumn and winter. :)

Hmm...seems the joke is lost in translation, or I don't understand the Russian humor, which is often the case. :)) Yes, I am bored with the legal world now, and tired of representing big corporations. I like humanitarian type work, where I feel like I am impacting positive change, and enhancing knowledge and human connections...even if it is only for one or two individuals. :)

There's even a better option for you - come to Ukraine and teach them English. They're going to abandon the Russian language and switch to English. A humungous amount of work!

Ukraine and Russia - these countries are massive and I would feel totally lost in them. Georgia - it is small, cozy and hospitable. The country is even smaller than some of our States, thus it is not so overwhelming from a psychological standpoint, at least for me. Plus, it is very easy to escape from busy city life in Tbilisi to remote, quite and peaceful mountain regions. And I do not plan to cease adventures and explorations if I move there. :))

I know that teaching over Skype or other messenger is used by some people internationally. You may try finding companies who are offering this service. Also, ESL in school could be an option, however, you may need a license. If you would like to offer lessons independently, I may connect you to a person who really looking for improvements in his English writing skills. It may be a good experience to begin with. Let me know.

I do not like this method of "virtual" communications. Not in real life, or teaching. I prefer "live" interactions with humans, and especially with something like teaching where trust must be built. The most optimal choice is to teach at an American or British school in Tbilisi. These schools pay wages about 4 times higher than offering private Georgian lessons on my own. You do not need a license, based on my research. However, I don't have any real teaching experience yet, and this will probably be an obstacle. Let's wait and see...:)) I will visit again in October, and explore options when I'm on the ground. The visit will be a reconnaissance mission of sorts. :)) Sure, you can give my contact information to your friend - use my email shanrocks75@gmail.com. I have a lot of experience editing articles, and other types of writing.

Yes, you were one of my first subscribers, so of course you remember. And I remember that in that post where the picture appeared, you told me you are a geophysicist. And I was amazed again that so many intelligent men and women read my blog, but mostly men. :)) I hope you're having a nice summer, Vlad!

There's an American Academy in Tbilisi. They might have some ideas to share. Information is on-line.

Thanks! There are several American and British schools/academies in Tbilisi, but I think they will require teaching experience, which I don't have. I will reach out to them in September when the school season starts again to inquire about options and interest.

I wonder what's wrong with Moscow and SPb?

peacetraveler22

Moscow - this city is way too busy, congested and "artificial" for me. I don't like such fast-paced living environments. I like St. Petersburg, but don't know anyone there. Overall, the culture of Georgia is more open, friendly and hospitable than Russia based on my experiences. And, the food is better. :)) There are also less hassles involved for foreigners to work/live there, as they have liberal policies to attract Westerners to the region. No visas, etc.

I really have no desire to live in Russia. :)) But the pay there for native English speakers is 100% better than in Georgia, for sure! You teach English in this city?

You don't need any contacts. Just put an ad in a newspaper. Only make sure the authorities won't demand a licence or you can get into a trouble. Authorities are usually corrupted in such little countries of the former USSR. Personally I wouldn't go to Georgia to teach English. Japan is much nicer for that. What's wrong with International TEFL Academy? If you have a certificate you can go to any country they offer.

I have no interest in teaching or living in Asia. However, most people in my TEFL course were looking to teach in South Korea, where you are paid very well, given an apartment, etc. Asia has the most perks, besides the Middle East, which presents separate challenges for female teachers.

Hi Shannon, if it helps I know the company that connects teachers with students. It calls vipkid teacher's portal. Look them up.
My friend's daughter is recently working as an English teacher using Skype and she is doing it through this company. She is traveling and lives in Europe right now, so what you want to do is doable.
I will message you her facebook contact, I asked her and she said it's okay if you contact her....she can talk to you and answer your questions.
Good luck with your new career! I would love to do something like this, but I have my Russian accent unfortunately :(

I'm afraid Georgia is too small to accommodate more than few English teachers and Georgians aren't wealthy enough to pay to tutors

They had a whole army of native English speakers in the Teach Learn Georgia program, which still exists. You can read about it online. However, I don't want to live in a remote village for so long, that's why I'm exploring options in Tbilisi.
