Off to Uzbekistan!

Uzbekistan-seven-nationalities-visa-free

At long last, I will travel to one of the "stan" countries! I depart for Uzbekistan in two weeks. In July of this year, the Uzbeks made e-visas possible for citizens of the U.S. Very simple online procedure to get a tourist visa, and only $20! Way to go Uzbeks, although I am 100% against any visa regimes. But alas, I do not make the rules of the world.

Please share any insights about Uzbekistan. Where to go, what to see, eat, and so forth. Many thanks! I'm very excited about this journey...

Узбекский плов это как русская пицаа. Давно ли узбеки узнали что такое рис?

Always stay in your hotel room. Don't even think to eat anything. Beware locals.

Haha! And what would be the point in traveling half way around the world to stay in a hotel room, fear locals and not eat? :)) I do not live life in constant fear...no matter where I am on the globe.

Bring cash, check with locals on how to change it.
Fly business class for 20$, but do not expect any catering.
Ride business class on high speed trains for 8$, but expect 3 levels of security to pass.

However, great food, extreme hospitality and beauty awaits you there, so definitely worth a trip.

Thank you for the sensible comment. I will take a flight on Uzbek Airlines and also travel on the local trains! Looking forward to it.

Khiva is sity must see. Fortress wall around with gates are still intact.
Traditional handmade silk fabrics of Marghilon are unique.

How much would locals pay for one of those lovely silk scarves? The main thing is to not be ripped off as a tourist.

never been there, so no insights, sorry. but I like the photo, the colors look promising. and I'm definitely looking forward to reading the report. are you going to have to wear some sort of head scarf or babushka?
peacetraveler22
Oct. 22nd, 2018 05:02 pm (UTC)
Based on what friends tell me who have traveled there, it is not necessary to wear a head covering unless you're visiting one of the religious sites. I know several women who have been there, and none of them covered their head. I will be prepared though. :)

Too many Uzbeks are in Russia. They are like mexicans in the USA, but only dirtier and uneducated.
Try Kazahstan, better.

What is wrong with Mexicans? :) They are a very important part of the U.S. labor market, as they perform work that most Americans are too lazy to do, or think it is somehow beneath them. And I am sure it is the same with the Uzbeks in Moscow.

It's worth to see Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand. I was there 10 years ago.
Feel free to eat anything, not too much. :)
Try to use cash there.
Do not worry about uzbeks, you'll find a common people.
Be aware about prices at bizzar: bargain is welcome.

Thanks! I will go to all the places you mentioned. I wonder if a lot of people there still speak or understand Russian? I do not expect to find many English speakers.

Just FYI: US citizens don't need a visa to enter Kazakhstan, if it's a short term visit (up to 15 days). Enjoy your trip to our neighbors. I hope that someday I'll read your impressions about our country (KZ) as well.

in Tajikistan, also an electronic visa. But in the autumn and winter in Tajikistan, there is nothing to do. Have a good trip! Be sure to visit the city of Khiva. This is better than Samarkand

Hi, Shannon :) Nice to "see" you after a long time. Do you remember me? :)
I am Victoria from Uzbekistan :)

In June this year, I met Sasha Belenkiy with Darya in Tashkent :)
I am ready to help you with some advice and give a possible assistance :)

You should visit Samarkand and Bukhara for sure :) And I will be glad to show you Tashkent :) Let's contact in any chat for details. You can find me in Facebook messenger (Victoria Ximera). Or give me your number, I will save it. I think you use Viber, or Telegram, or WhatsApp, or imo. I have them all :)

Hi Victoria! Of course, I remember you! :)) I am sure you were happy to see that I will finally make it to Uzbekistan. I'm traveling there with my friend from Tbilisi, Georgia and we are still finalizing our route and schedule. I think we will only be in Tashkent upon arrival, and to depart at the end of the journey. I also received your private message. I will write you closer to departure when I know all details. Thanks a lot for your very kind offer to help! I really appreciate it, and am looking forward to visiting your homeland. Cheers from the USA! :)
