Strange Collections

It all began around 3 a.m., when sudden thoughts about collections entered my mind. Since childhood I've suffered from horrible insomnia. My body is accustomed to minimal sleep because it has no other choice. Even when I'm exhausted it takes me at least one hour to fall asleep, followed by numerous awakenings throughout the night. The silence and boredom in the middle of the night sometimes opens the door for obsessive thinking. Neurosis starts to set in - why am I alone? Why is there no one in my bed to talk to or play with? When can I leave my job and pursue my dreams? Tears, tissues, loneliness. :)) Usually I read to occupy my mind, but even this has made me restless recently. So early this morning I started organizing my hat collection. In total I have about 50 hats, most of which were purchased abroad or at craft shows.

1. I try to find a hat in every country I visit, but sadly in Russia I didn't buy one. What a pity because there are some great hats there. My favorite hats are multi-colored and most have balls on the top or ends. One of my friends made me this brown and yellow hat, which I wear frequently.

2. But this is my favorite! My bear hat, purchased this winter at a U.S. store called "Walmart." This store is similar to Aшан, selling food, clothes, household items, etc. My mother hates this hat and always tells me it's "creepy." :)

3. In addition to hats, I collect cheap wigs. I don't know why. It started a few years ago at Halloween when my nephew wanted me to be a witch. I've always liked black hair on men and women, so after the black witch wig I started buying others. I have a blonde one, but it's really awful! Sometimes I'll play dress up, be an entirely different person and go out on the town.

4. A common theme with my collections is the ability to cover my head. :) Mostly it's because I have crazy curly hair that's hard to manage. I couldn't find a good example except the below, a crappy web cam pic taken after a day at the pool last summer. Heat and humidity - a curly-haired girl's nightmare. Of course it also can look nice but only after a lot of work. Perhaps this is another reason I hate summer. It's too warm to wear hats, so my hair usually stays in a ponytail or bun.

5. Recently I started collecting things from the Soviet era, like this propaganda poster I purchased at a cool bookstore in Moscow. I have three others and two readers have sent me childrens' books from Soviet times. I'm still waiting for both to arrive in my mailbox.

Like other travelers, I also have a large collection of refrigerator magnets from various countries. When I traveled to Thailand about ten years ago I started collecting Buddhas, and friends often buy them for me at home and abroad. I keep most hand-written notes and cards given to me, including postcards, cute notes from old boyfriends, napkin notes, etc. The strangest things which have significant sentimental value to me, all sitting in a box in my closet. I even have hair from my old boyfriend in a plastic bag. It sounds odd and serial killer like, but it's a great memory from our relationship - the first time I ever cut his very long hair.

What drives us to collect certain things? I'm not sure, but I think every person has some item they routinely search for no matter the location. How about my readers? I'm always curious to learn more about you, so please share what you collect in the comments. And any tips for battling insomnia also are appreciated!

Thank you for another interesting post!:)
Firstly, you are not alone, because you are readed by a lot of people :) Secondly, very nice hats!!:) Thirdly, about curly hair....do you know how much time It may take girls with straight hair to make a volume ?:) and you have it permanently!:)
As for collecting. I keep hand-writen letters, postcards, magnets. For a long time kept magazines and loved to reread them sometimes :)

Anna, hello! I like my curly hair, it's just hard to deal with sometimes. :) I remember in your wedding photos you had some waves in your hair. I used to keep magazines as well and all of the papers, poems and short stories I wrote during university, etc. Then I ran out of space and had to discard them.

But don't be sad, please! You have your readers!

A dragon collection is very cool and unique! I like the dragon carved out of snow. This is a strange phase of life I'm going through. I'll be sure to return to my happy self soon. :)

I love this post too! Woman, I have crazy insomnia Im always up until like 2 or 3 am and sometimes toss and turn like crazy all night! We have talked about the insomnia before... sex and alcohol!! You look so cute in hats! Even the weird bear one. I keep hand written notes too and most cards. I still get pictures developed and have a million photos that need to be organized in photo albums. Im a huge sports fan. So I collect a lot of signed sports memorabilia. When I was younger and didn't have crazy bills I had an obsession with buying every DVD that came out and expensive handbags. But unfortunately or fortunately, those days are long gone. Hope you are getting some sleep now! Xoxo

Sex and alcohol, your answer for everything. :)) Alcohol is the only thing that helps me sleep, but I don't want to turn into a drunkard. Sex, well sure. :) But not with random people, so waiting for someone worthwhile to come along. I didn't know you collect sports memorabilia. Is it mostly baseball stuff?

My sister collects turtle figurines. Bear hat used to be my avatar, but I changed it for summer. The thought of that thick hat on my head in the summer immediately makes me sweat! :) We have very hot and humid air in DC now (around 35 Celsius). I hate it, probably a big reason for my bad mood recently.

I'm collecting coins, with my grandma. Ten-rouble coins with a pictures of old Russian cities on it. Also we have Soviet coins, early 90s Russian coins, and some foreign coins.

Nice hats, by the way. And nice hair. :)

I collect dolls )))

P.S. You're beautiful ))
Jun. 27th, 2013 07:35 pm (UTC)
Dolls and married men? :)) I never played with dolls when I was a kid, but every year I dress a doll for a Detroit charity. They give them to under-privileged girls in Detroit at Christmas. The doll arrived today and I have to make an outfit for her. Should she be Indian, African, Pacific-Islander, Native American? What do you think? :)) I would ask my readers but mostly men comment on my posts and they will not care about dolls.

P.S. - thanks for compliment.

Here she is:

This bear hat is great! Ready to act in some werewolf movie :)

I thought these wool hats were from Russia :)
Our women wear such.
Americans, as I noticed, do not like to cover their heads, at least this is true for urban men.
I worked with Americans in Moscow in early 90s and they did not like to wear hats even when it was -20C.
Sometimes I thought that their ears would eventually be frozen and fall down their heads :)

I read somewhere that people with insomnia cannot cool down their brains (that's what alcohol does - it relaxes you mind) so the possible cure would be to literally make one's forehead cold.
I use Chinese qigong meditation to cool down: when I concenrate on the ball inside my belly (one of exercises) it relaxes everything.

Have you ever heard about Estonian cap-scarves? I have the one, it is very nice and very convenient. (I used to loose my caps before, it was so pity because I usually bought a set containing a cap and a scarf... and a scarf with a cap from another set looked unfitting)
It looks like this:
When you are in Tallinn, you may look for such a cap there. :)))
Sep. 17th, 2013 01:31 pm (UTC)
Oh, this is great!! I'll be in Estonia next week and will look for one of these. It will be a great addition to my collection. :)

As for insomnia - sometimes I suffer from it too, the only things to overcome it what I know are reading and... writing.
PS My previous comment about an Estonian cap-scarf (with picture!) was marked as spam again...
