Postal War Conclusion!

The postal war has ended! My reader in Moscow received her book on 23 July. You will recall we both mailed books to each other on the same date - 14 June 2013. U.S. Postal Service delivered the wonderful book "букварь" to my apartment on 11 July, and Natalie received her book from Russian Post only 12 days later. I expected it to take much longer. No horror story of taking up to six months to deliver a package. In this instance, the package from America arrived in about five weeks. Good job Почта России! :)

I have many relatives working at U.S. Post Offices, including one in my small hometown of Manassas, Virginia. If it's interesting, I can write a story about this local office. Show the inner workings of how it operates, how mail workers handle customers and process mail, etc. What do you think?

Here's Natalie's post on the book I sent:

I've received a book what Shannon sent to me.

book

I couldn't wait till coming to work or to home.
I've opened it in my morning suburban.
And first what I've seen were some words from Shannon.

book2

It seemed I met her. Amazing feelings.
Now I am on my way to work, and I couldn't wait. So I write this post immediately.
This Moscow grey morning became joyful.
Many interesting adventures are waiting for me with this book.
I began to read

Dear Shannon peacetraveler22 thank you so much. It is very interesting and helps me to improve my English.

Yep. Thats because you have sent a book, moreover - in english. Try to send some portable electronics or any other stuff that some Russian fellow can actually use and see what's going to happen ;)

I've never sent electronics. Only food, books and license plates. I suppose these things are of no interest to the Russian postal workers. :)

There is an article describing an amazing experiment: they sent a cell phone set up to track and report its location, from Kiev to Moscow by airmail. The parcel went to Moscow... and then to Novosibirsk, by surface! (Apparently, for customs clearance.) It sat in Novosibirsk for a month, then crawled back to Moscow. The whole travel took 50 days.

I will try to visit soon and write a report. One of my mom's sisters managed a whole Western branch of post offices.

By the way, I have another proof of terrible work of Russian Post. Being in Thailand in November 2012 we sent a postcard to our parents in Moscow. And they recieved it... in July 2013:)))) 2 weeks later they received our postcard from America;)

Eight months, how can it be? :)) When my friend lived in Ukraine, I used to mail packages to Kyiv and they would almost always take exactly ten days to arrive.

What kind of special company? Like FedEx or UPS? A few weeks ago I sent a light weight package to Moscow via FedEx international priority and it was $85!!

Alternative post
Hey, Shannon, I`m glad to read you again. Because of bad work of our post, our people send everything, using passangers train and busses. It`s prohibited, but it`s Rassia, no problem with conductor with the cash. And some Customs stories. Two parsels my fellov collegs and me maneged to find in pasengers realway cars on Russian - Ukranian border. 1 It was a paper bax with books and old fasian phone, old, because it did have buttons. We thought it,s strange, and unlocked the phone body, well 3 500 US $ were inside. Next, it was real fun. in first class realway car, I foud out a bee flying inside, strange? In one compartment, under the pillow we found a spesial box, separated on to 120 celles with living bees, they were queen Bees, very expansive.

Re: Alternative post
Hello! I took a break from the blog for a little while, but am back. :) Customs officers - I'm sure they find a lot of unusual and interesting things. What happened to the $3,500? It went back to the shipper, or the Customs officers split it?

There's also a large illegal trade in the U.S. for endangered and exotic animals/insects. Btw, did you read my first story from Wyoming earlier in the week? I believe you would really like this State -http://peacetraveler22.livejournal.com/40042.html.
