Future Whores of America?

Yesterday I saw an interview with Miley Cyrus where she spoke complete nonsense. Absolutely nothing intelligent coming out of her mouth. Recently she has taken America by storm because of her overly sexual antics. For many, it's difficult to view her this way because she grew up on American television as a child star on the Disney Channel. Now she's on stage simulating sex and releasing videos like this one for her new song "Wrecking Ball." In a week, the video has over 118,000,000 views. Of course, the whole transition from innocent girl to seductress is a brilliant marketing scheme. No matter the nation, sex sells. But then I began thinking about my young cousins who adored her as the Disney character "Hannah Montana" only a few years ago. Now they see her swinging naked on a wrecking ball and licking a sledgehammer!! Sexy? Perhaps this is one of the most subjective words in the English dictionary.

The only pop star during my generation who pushed such boundaries was Madonna, but I don't believe her actions rose to this extreme scale. Personally, I don't care if adult female singers or actresses portray themselves in a sexual manner. What a woman does with her body is her choice. If she wants to sell it through prostitution or sexually suggestive marketing strategies more power to her. For instance, I fully support legalization of prostitution in all States. It should be regulated and taxed, etc.

However, I do believe there's real harm in young girls seeing people like this as role models. Parents can try to shield children from such scenes to a certain extent, but in the multi-media world in which we live kids will still be exposed to it at school, on the Internet, etc. What about famous Russian pop stars? I don't know any, but do the young singers behave in a similar fashion? And for those of you who have young daughters, do you worry about them being sexualized at a young age? In America, it's becoming a real sickness. Even clothing for very young girls is becoming more risque. Last year, mega retailer Abercrombie & Fitch released thongs in very small sizes. The average age of the target consumer was said to be 10 -11 years old. "Wink wink", "candy", etc. Is it okay for these sayings to be associated with a ten year old crotch?
thong

All women should embrace their sexuality, but when girls as young as ten or eleven are doing it it causes me great concern. Further, all young girls should be taught self-esteem and worth at a young age, but such inherent feelings should not be solely tied to beauty and sexuality. Sex, being provocative, running around half naked. These actions should not be the only pathway to success and acceptance in mainstream culture.

I think Nabokov just described the reality.
This is like blaming Dostoevskiy for existence of murderers.

Hasn't Britney Spears also gone the same way? From Disney (Mickey Mouse club or whatever) child star to you-know-what? Miley's escapades are even more sexualized, but there's definitely a pattern here.

As for the influence on children, that's hard to judge. Depends on kids and families, too. My daughter liked Hannah M. when she was 10. Now, she's 14, and she only rolls her eyes at M.S.'s new image: Like, whatever. Who could've thought she'll come that far for the sake of the popularity. Bah.
Which goes to show that one shouldn't underestimate the ability of teenagers to judge for themselves.

Britney also was a Disney star, same with Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera. Your daughter is a smart girl then, probably raised by very good parents. But unfortunately many young girls have no guidance from parents and, as a result, search for acceptance and love through sex.

Mostly Russian showbiz is a copy (bad copy) of eastern one. There is nothing «fresh»…

This is «Singing Pants»- Поющие трусы. With pretty provocative song "Come to the sauna today"...
This is a kind of parody about relations in showbiz which are based only at literally prostitution ))

Miley turned into Britney. ))) I personally have no problems with that, it's natural evolution , in her case it's public since she's been a public figure since she was A child. As a mother to a young girl I am worried but while its up to me I am putting a lot of time and efforts to explain what's right and what's wrong.

First of all, I think now you understand motivation for this "anti gay propaganda" law in Russia.

We see public expression of all these gay things as another step in provocative sexualization of the society.
Something opposite to the normal and moderate family life, the values of a healthy life that Russia so needs today.

The next step is pedophilia, as it was predicted, and now even _you_ start to worry :))

Next, and much more important, is the following:
This space for provocations still exist because on the West (including Russia) thousands years of Christianity created schizophrenic mentality.
We cannot live without sex for biological reasons and so we have all these sex toys, pornography, etc.
This all is very attractive to majority of people.
But at the same time we tend to view sexual expressions as something low and dirty, opposed to "high" values like self-esteem, etc.
Everybody masturbate but do not tell others about it.
Everybody like to watch porn but do not talk about it.

This is why there is a space for shock and provocation.
We see some popular artist or some princess naked and start to shout "look, look, have you seen that?".
But they are people like we are, with the same physiology. No surprises expected :))

I like eastern approach more, where there is no such division between high and low, where sex is not a moral question but a question of physiology. Where nudity is normal and not provocative.
In daoist and tantric systems practitioners actually use sexual energy and sexual desires as a vehicle to reach much higher and subtle states.
There is nothing prohibited but nothing provocative.
Just pure and simple continuum of states of desire, love and wisdom.

This tantric sex is very intriguing and interesting, but I doubt I have enough patience to practice it. "Sex is not a moral question but a question of physiology." I don't think there's a way to completely separate sex from morality. If we see it only as a question of physiology, it would then follow that it's okay for married men to fuck any woman they want (even if they're married) based on their physical needs, which are typically much stronger than women's on the sexual front. Men have the hunter mentality, craving many more partners than the usual woman. Morals are the driving force behind fidelity and monogamy.

I watched "Hannah Montana" series some time ago (just had a TV-set on while cooking) and found it rather stupid. But still, I can't say that the series could do harm to children. It's a pity that Miley Cyrus has chosen that kind of image having many admirers among teenagers.

As for the clothes for young girls, it's much the same in Russia too. There are mothers who buy very short dresses for their little daughters, make them up and even take photos of them in special "adult" poses. May be they think that it's good for a girl to radiate sexuality. I personally find it ugly and inappropriate.

I agree, the show was horrible! It was mindless entertainment for pre-teens. I can't say I understand the mentality of women who dress their daughters this way.

I think it's especially important for young girls to have strong father figures. If not, it almost always paves the way to horrible romantic relationships with men.
