National Sibling Day

portugal

Today in America we celebrate National Sibling Day, a day to honor your brother or sister. I have one sister who is four years younger than me. Here we are in Portugal about ten years ago. Youth and thinness! :) In general, we've always had a close relationship, although I used to steal and hide her stuffed animals as a child when she annoyed me. Somehow she always forgave me. We have different personalities. She's more reserved, quiet, and not as outspoken as me. She can solve equations, fix mechanical things, and change a tire. I'm not so good at any of those things. Conversely, she struggles with conveying her thoughts in written form, and is overly polite, even when people don't deserve such respect and kindness. This sometimes makes me insane. I would say my sister is more like my father - passive and reserved, and I inherited my mother's trait of "telling it like it is." This isn't always the best policy, as it's sometimes better to bite your tongue and let the moment pass. Overall, she is more conservative than me in ideology and life practices.

Here we are a few years ago on the English Coast, standing on the Seven Sisters' cliffs. A beautiful landscape, yet also tragic. Seven Sisters holds the distinction of being one of the top suicide spots in the world.

england

I admire her most because she's an exceptional mother to my nephew. Always spending quality time with him, teaching him things, and offering support for all of his activities. I always say parenting is the most important job on the planet, and those who do it well are a special breed. And, let's face it, no matter the country mothers typically carry a heavier load when it comes to child rearing. They are the champions of the world!

Do you have any brothers or sisters? Do you like or hate each other? I can't imagine life without my sister!

Good evening. I have a question: what does mean "huckleberry friend"?
peacetraveler22
Apr. 10th, 2014 08:12 pm (UTC)
It means a very close friend, someone who will stand by your side no matter what. The term derived from the Mark Twain novel "Huckleberry Finn." Huckleberry Finn stood by Jim (black slave in the book), when it would have been easier to just sell him off. Does it make sense to you?

Do you resemble each other in appearance? I don't think my sister and I look too much alike, besides the fact we both have curly hair.

You look so nice together! I agree, to be a mother is the most beautiful and most important job on Earth. But not every woman is born to be a good mother.
My late brother was (he died in 2010, lung cancer) my best friend. I have a sister too, but we aren't so close, we are too different. But we are the last of our generation left, so we keep in touch, but online only, we are too far.

Sorry about your loss. My mom's oldest sister died a few years ago, and I still miss her to this day. She was ill for a long time. Her passing wasn't unexpected, but you can never fully prepare yourself for when it happens. Yes, many mothers are not loving or caring, and they produce damaged adults. I'm not sure I would be a good mom, but I've never had a strong desire for children, so the point is moot.

Seems people learn to value family more as they age. For me, I've always been close to my sister and extended family. Without them, I would have had many sad and lonely periods in life.

my sister is 7 years younger than me. when she was born, my childhood was over. that was the rule in our family - only the youngest child is a child. and of course she couldn't help using it. sometimes i just hated her. everything changed when we both became mothers. at the moment we have the real sisterhood and her kis are like my own for me.

Good things. He's a very curious and brilliant child. He knows flags from almost all countries, and has been reading books since about three years old. He started school this year, and his teachers are amazed. He recently got placed in advanced learning classes because his knowledge is way above the level of other students.

In America, we have a special day for everything. Not official holidays, of course, but a way to celebrate. There's even a "steak and blowjob day." :)) It's a "man day" celebrated on 14 March, exactly one month after Valentine's Day. http://www.steakandbj.org/about-the-holiday/

Unfortunately (or may fortunately) I don't have any siblings. But if I had I would be the eldest sister, because I was born just one day before my parents' first wedding anniversary. Nevertheless, I can't imagine myself having a siblings and I am not sure whether my childhood might have been better or worse if I had had them.

It's hard to say if life would have been better or worse. :) Some siblings don't get along, and in that case, the peace of being an only child is highly valuable.
