Uzbekistan

uzbekistan-flag

One of my friends recently arrived in Uzbekistan for a two year assignment with the State Department, and I have an open invitation to visit the country. I know very little about this place, but it looks quite colorful and interesting. Do any of my readers live here? What to see and do? I think it's too hot to visit during summer months, but maybe early autumn is a good time. If anyone has contacts with local tourism boards or agencies, I would be grateful for information. The Uzbek government appears to have an official tourism portal here, but emails have gone unanswered. I will likely need the assistance of locals if I journey to the region.

Are readers interested in seeing travel essays from this country? If you've read any reports or stories from Uzbekistan from other bloggers, please drop links in comments.

She can help, but will be working during the day. Plus, I want to go to remote rural villages outside Tashkent. She will probably have no information on these areas. I don't anticipate there are a lot of English speakers there, but maybe I'm wrong.

What do you think? Will it be hard to find English speakers there?

There are a lot of migrant workers from Uzbekistan in Moscow? I remember a lot of Tajiks! They are the equivalent of our Mexican and Central American workers in America. Personally, they don't bother me. Most of them are dedicated workers, taking hard labor jobs most Americans won't do.

Some of my friends were born here (or there) in USSR.
In 90-x they were knocked out of this country, without money, without home. Someone was killed, some women was fucked.
In 2000-x uzbeks come to Russia for a job.

I like tham. They are very good people.

Tashkent is where your friend lives, you can stay there too but the city is rebuilt after 1966 earthquake.
dont go alone. better have a group of people and a few men with the group
the place is really lovely. wait till September and you will have delicious fruits and vegetables at their markets
my mom was born there in 1922
I visited Uzbekistan with a group in 1993.
great place.

I'm jealous, I wanna go with you
some tips.
- take a lot of Imodium it'll help when you eat anything which your stomach is not used to.
- do not drink house water, only from bottle. Take sanitizer/wipes
- most of the food is very greasy. My advise start with naan(bread), fruits, green/pumpkin samosas, wine.
- do not buy any souvenirs without local friends as at a last moment they can switch it to the trash ones.
- hire any person with a car to become your driver during the stay-time. It's safer and also you'll pay them fixes salary.
-when locals invite you to their houses to have a dinner/lunch/whatever not decline. it's a big offence for them. try a small piece that's enough to show them your respect and politeness.
-when strangers shake your hand or kiss you (oh yeah even a men to men) do not run away:) it's a common thing in there to say "hello".
-in bazaars/markets you can trade half of the asked price.
-on FB you can find uzbek people group who are living in USA. They can help to reserve a hotel/room and so on.

Thank you for the detailed advice! I think it's a good idea to bring a calculator for bargaining purposes in the market, to show the price I'm willing to pay. :)) There will probably be a big language barrier, and communication may be difficult. This is why it would be great to travel with a native in the region, although I don't think I would accept a dinner or car ride invitation from a stranger. Seems too unsafe in all parts of the world, especially as a female traveler.
